calming down a bit

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Chico has received 2.76" of rain since last Monday, which brings the season total since last July 1st to 14.72 inches. That is about seven inches below where we should be at this point in the season. Still, this past week's storms did put a dent in our drought, especially for the mountain snowpack. Some parts of the Sierra Nevada received nearly eight feet of snow! The weather will begin to calm down a bit as we head into this weekend and next week. There will still be some on-and-off pop-up showers, but no deluge like we had earlier this week. Winds should also lessen, but temperatures will stay below normal the next seven days. Chico normally sees high temps in the upper 60s for the middle of March; however, forecast highs will only be in the mid 50s to mid 60s today through next Friday. This next week is spring break for Chico State students, and I'm sure many of the students and faculty will be off to warmer climes. For those staying in the area, keep a jacket and umbrella handy if doing any outdoor activities. Here is the detailed seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Today: A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11am. Partly sunny, with a high near 55. East wind at 8 mph becoming west northwest. Oh, the Flood Advisory for small stream and urban flooding is still in effect until 2:30 pm this afternoon. Keep an eye on those creeks if you live near one, and be careful driving through water-covered roadways. Like the National Weather Service says: "Turn around, don't drown."
