another round of showers before sun returns this weekend

Not much rain fell with this system, as Chico picked up only .26" of rain. However, some Sierra foothills communities picked up ample amounts of snow, including Forest Ranch and Magalia. They saw as much as 4-6" of snow between late last night and this morning. Winds were more impressive, as Chico experienced a wind gust of 43 mph just before midnight last night. Winds have subsided this afternoon, but it is still breezy with winds between 15-20 mph. Another impulse from this broad area of low pressure will pinwheel through our area tonight and tomorrow, bringing more rain showers for the valley and snow above 2000 feet in elevation. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Sierra foothills through tomorrow, and a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Sierra Nevada above 3000 feet. Expect an additional 3-5" of snow above 2000 feet, and 6-12 inches or more above 4000 feet through tomorrow. For Chico, the sun should return by tomorrow afternoon after morning showers. This weekend still looks wonderful, with sunny skies and highs in the mid 60s. A chance of showers returns for early next week. Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a low around 36. Southeast wind between 7 and 14 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Thursday: Showers likely. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 52. Southeast wind 5 to 14 mph becoming southwest. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

winter returns

It has been blustery in Chico and surrounding areas today, with winds gusting to nearly 40 mph at the Chico Airport around noon. These winds are being caused by a strong low pressure system and associated cold front originating from the Gulf of Alaska. Rain should overtake the valley later this evening, while snow will begin piling up in the Sierra Nevada foothills and mountains tonight. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Sierra above 2000 feet from 10 pm tonight through 10 pm tomorrow night (Wednesday). Expect 4-6 inches of snow above 2000 feet (including upper Paradise, Magalia, and Forest Ranch), while elevations above 4500 feet will be looking at 1 to 2 feet of new snow. Winds will be howling in both valley and mountain locations. A Wind Advisory is in effect for the central and northern Sacramento Valley (including Chico) beginning at 6 this evening and ending at 10 am tomorrow. Winds may gust to 45 mph in the valley and 65-70 mph in the mountains. Power outages may be possible as tree limbs snap and fall on power lines. Blizzard conditions will exist overnight tonight and through the day tomorrow in the Sierra Nevada mountains. How exciting! Our first bona fide winter storm of the season! We would normally see this type of storm in November or December. Here is the detailed seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Finally! Some winter weather!

Better late than never, I suppose. It was quite chilly today, with mostly cloudy skies and temps stuck in the lower 50s. A weak weather system will move through our area overnight tonight, bringing trace amounts of rain to the valley
and maybe an inch of snow to the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada. We'll have a lull in the weather from tomorrow afternoon until Tuesday afternoon. Partly cloudy skies tomorrow night will mean plunging temps dipping into the upper 20s for lows in Chico by Tuesday morning. Clouds increase as Tuesday progresses, and rain is likely by Tuesday evening. There may be blizzard conditions in the Sierra Tuesday night and most of the day Wednesday, as snow piles up (up to a foot or more is expected above 5000 feet) and winds gust to 70 mph! A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the northern Sierra Nevada for Tuesday night through early Thursday. In the valley (including Chico) expect rain showers on Wednesday and winds gusting to 30 mph. The storm moves out by Thursday afternoon, but the cold air stays as highs struggle to reach 50 degrees. By next weekend, sunny skies return with highs in the mid 60s (where we should be for early March). Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 31. North northwest wind around 6 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

rain likely by mid-week?

It has been a blustery and cool day in Chico today, with gusty northwesterly winds up to 25 mph and temperatures stuck in the mid to upper 50s this afternoon. It will stay below average temperature- wise through the middle of next week, and we may see a decent chance of rain showers in the valley Tuesday night through Thursday. Significant snow is also possible for the Sierra Nevada, with snow levels by Wednesday down to 3000 feet. It's too soon to know exactly how much snow will fall, but expect travel difficulties if you're driving through the Sierra Tuesday through Wednesday. A weak and quick- moving system will swing through late tomorrow night and into Monday, bringing a slight chance of showers to the valley. Temperatures should warm back to around average by Friday and Saturday as sunny weather takes charge. Here's the detailed seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Yep, today marks day #3 of temperatures above 70 degrees in Chico. Yesterday was especially windy in Chico, as well, with winds gusting from the northwest over 30 mph. Temps tomorrow will be nearly 15-20 degrees below what they are today! It'll be a mixed bag of weather the next seven days, with slight chances of rain mixed in with partly to mostly sunny skies. Again, high temps will remain below average (63-64 degrees) through the middle of next week. Here is the latest forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

just a brief warm up

Wow! Temperatures around Chico currently are ranging between 73 degrees at the airport (on the north edge of town) to 77 degrees at the University Farm (on the south side of town). Although not in record territory, it is still very warm. It's amazing to have these temperature readings in February (our normal high temp is 63 degrees for today). Enjoy this sunny, warm weather while it lasts, because a big cooldown is coming. A Wind Advisory is still in effect for tomorrow, with northwesterly winds sustained at 20-25 mph and gusts to 40 mph. The strongest winds will be west of Chico, but Chico could still see some very breezy conditions. Temperatues will cool down into the upper 50s to around 60 degrees for this weekend, as a cold front brings down some much cooler air from Canada. Other than slight chances of rain Saturday and again Tuesday night/ Wednesday, expect dry and partly sunny conditions the next seven days. Here's the detailed forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 43. North northwest wind between 13 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.

Get ready for some warm weather!

Especially after today's cool and dreary conditions. A weak cold front brought clouds and below average temperatures (but no rain) to our area today. Temps have been stuck in the mid 50s all afternoon after morning lows in the mid 40s. This front should move east of our region tonight as high pressure builds in from the west. This will cause temps tomorrow and Wednesday to be 15 to 20 degrees warmer than today's temps. Expect breezy to windy conditions on Thursday as another storm passes to our north (will we ever see rain again?). Temperatures cool to below average again this weekend (normal high this time of year is 63 degrees), so enjoy the warm temperatures while they last! Here's the detailed seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 42. North northwest wind around 5 mph.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 70. North northwest wind between 3 and 9 mph.

Tuesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 45. North northwest wind between 3 and 5 mph.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 74. North northwest wind between 5 and 8 mph.

continued spring like weather

The past two days in Chico (Thursday and Friday) have been uneventful, with dry conditions and temps seasonable- mainly in the low to mid 60s. I think climatologically speaking (is that even spelled correctly?), Chico is similar to Atlanta, GA (except without all the humidity!). By mid-February we normally see highs above 60 degrees. Also around this time, the flowering and fruit-bearing trees begin to bloom. The beautiful white and pink blooms can last through the middle of March some years. Right around mid-March, on average, the decidous trees begin to bloom, such as the elm, walnut, sweetgum, silver maple, and Chinese pistache. Given how warm it has been, and how much warmer it is expected to be, these trees may begin blooming by the end of this month. It will be below normal temperature wise today through Monday as a weak trough pulls down some cooler air from the north. Hwever, a large area of high pressure will build in by Tuesday, and along with some northerly downsloping winds, will warm those temps into the 70s! Break out the shorts in February! Unfortunately, we won't see much if any rain the next seven days. I have a feeling it's going to be a very bad fire season this summer. Here's the latest forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Today: Isolated showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 59. Light wind becoming northwest between 11 and 14 mph. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 35. North northwest wind between 7 and 9 mph.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 58. Northwest wind between 3 and 5 mph.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 34. Light north wind.

Washington's Birthday: A 20 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 58. Light and variable wind.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 39.

Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 67.

Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 71.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 44.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 71.

Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 42.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 71.

not much rain in the forecast

First off, I want to discuss a weird weather event last evening. I was awakened around 11:30 last night to a heavy downpour of rain and hail. Lightning and thunder accompanied this, and the power at my house was out for about three hours. Mind you, I live in the Sierra Nevada foothills east of Chico; Chico did not experience any of this thunderstorm activity. What struck me was the very rapid movement of this seemingly isolated storm. All of this occurred in about a three to five minute timeframe. The storm left my location as quickly as it came. I assumed the storm was riding down the spine of the foothills in a northwest to southeast direction. It was strange. Anyway, as I said, Chico received no rain from this storm, and it looks as though there is no significant rain on the horizon. There will be slight chances of rain this weekend, but these storms will be weak and fast-moving. Gusty northwest winds that plagued Chico today (gusting up to 25-30 mph) will diminish this evening. High temps the next couple of days will be right around average- mainly in the mid 60s. Temps cool a bit over the weekend and into early next week as a weak trough digs in over northern California. However, a big, strong ridge of high pressure builds in mid-week next week, and high temps may exceed 70 degrees by next Wednesday and Thursday! Here is the detailed forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 34. North northwest wind between 5 and 13 mph.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 63. North northwest wind between 7 and 10 mph.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 39. North northeast wind around 6 mph.

Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 62. Northeast wind at 5 mph becoming south.

Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of rain, mainly after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44. Light southeast wind.

Saturday: A 30 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 55.

Saturday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35.

Sunday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 54.

Sunday Night: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37.

Washington's Birthday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 57.

still below normal for precipitation

Chico received .80" from this morning's storm, which brings our seasonal total to date to 11.67". We should be at about 17 inches to this point in the rainy season (which runs from July 1st through June 30th). The high temperature so far today in Chico has been 55 degrees, six degrees below the average for the date. High temps will remain below average for the most part the next seven days. It will be mainly dry during this time, with the exception of this upcoming weekend. Only a slight chance of rain is expected then, so don't cancel any outdoor plans just yet. However, it will be slightly chilly, so plan accordingly. Again, no big storms are on the horizon. It definitely has been a calm winter so far. Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Isolated showers before 10pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 36. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

cooler and wetter weather coming

It was kind of a mixed bag of weather today, with a mix of sun and clouds and highs right around 60-63 degrees in Chico. A winter storm is taking aim at Northern California and will begin to affect us over the next 24-36 hours. Valley locations should see anywhere from a quarter to a third of an inch of rain, while snow levels in the Sierra Nevada will drop down to 3500 feet late tomorrow night into early Monday. Snow accumulations will occur mainly above 4000 feet, where 3-6 inches of the white stuff will fall. Expect 10 inches of snow above 5500 feet. The ski resorts will definitely add to their base with this storm. Once this storm passes, expect drier weather, but cooler than what we've seen. Highs will range from the upper 50s to lower 60s, and mainly 30s for lows in the valley. Here is Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 39. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm.

Sunday: A 30 percent chance of rain after 4pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 59. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph.

Sunday Night: Rain, mainly after 10pm. Low around 39. East wind around 6 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Monday: Showers likely, mainly before 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 55. North northwest wind between 8 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Monday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers before 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33. North northwest wind between 10 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.

big cool down coming

After daytime high temperatures in the mid to upper 60s the past two days, winter will return with temps 10 to 12 degrees below where they have been. A cold front will move through the area late Friday and Friday night, bringing us only a slight chance of showers. What will be more noticeable will be the cooler air the cold front brings with it. High temps for both Saturday and Sunday will be in the low 60s, and by Monday only in the mid 50s! A second cold front that will arrive late Sunday will be responsible for the reinforcing shot of colder air by early next week. Fortunately, overnight lows in the valley should stay above freezing, thereby lessening any potential damage to the already blossoming almond trees. showery Tuesday followed by a sunny Wednesday and beyond

The high temperature in Chico today was 54 degrees under cloudy, gloomy skies. Chico received .19" as of 5 pm today. Showers are still falling, but should taper off later tonight with clearing skies after midnight. A low pressure system skirting down the California coast was responsible for today's wet weather. Once this low leaves, clear skies and dry weather follow and will stick around for awhile. High temps will rebound back into the mid to upper 60s, further encouraging those flowering trees to bloom. It looks like we're in store for another nice weekend, as well. Here's the detailed forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

warm and spring-like

Yesterday's high temperature in Chico reached 68 degrees, aided by the increasingly higher sun angle and gusty northwest (read: downsloping) winds. Even today the temperatures are hovering in the mid 60s. Some of the fruit and nut-bearing trees are beginning to bloom in Chico, including the almond and plum trees. This may not bode well as any freeze we get from here on out may damage or destroy the almond and other orchards. There's just a slight chance of rain for Monday night through Tuesday night; other than that, enjoy the spring weather in February! Here are the details for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 33. Light and variable wind.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 60. Light north northwest wind.

we need rain!

But we're just not going to get it. Yesterday and today have been mostly cloudy and coolish (current temps are in the mid to upper 50s); however, these clouds are not producing any precipitation. Storms are once again being shunted to our north as high pressure dominates. Other than a chance of rain next Tuesday, the next seven days will be rain-free and mild. I'm beginning to lose hope that we'll save the rainy season by having a wet spring. We'll just have to wait and see. For now, if you are a fan of sunny and spring-like weather in winter, this forecast is for you! From the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 35. North northwest wind between 5 and 7 mph.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 63. North northwest wind around 7 mph.

Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 33. Northeast wind around 6 mph.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 61. Northeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 35. Calm wind becoming east northeast between 7 and 10 mph.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 61.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 34.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 62.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 37.
