weather buzzwords: dry and warm

Those two words basically sum up the forecast for Chico the next seven days. There are rumors that we may exceed 70 degrees for a high temperature on Thursday! We should be in the upper 50s this time of year. Currently it's 64 degrees in Chico, and high temps should exceed 60 degrees every day for the next seven days. Oh, well. So much for winter. On the positive side, at least we'll have smaller heating bills! Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

What happened to winter?

Good question. It looks like we're in for another extended run of dry and warm weather. Other than a slight chance of rain tomorrow night and into Monday morning, there is no other mention of rain in the seven day forecast. Both yesterday and today have been warm (mid 60s for high temperatures), and it appears this warm trend will also be here to stay for awhile. The storms last week brought the Sierra Nevada snowpack from a paltry 24% to over 70% of normal. However, with no storms on the horizon, the snowpack will likely decrease over the next week. Not good. I'm hoping spring will be wetter than normal. Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Patchy frost after 4am. Otherwise, mostly clear, with a low around 33. West wind at 7 mph becoming northeast.

Sunday: Patchy frost before 10am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 60. Northeast wind around 6 mph becoming calm.

Sunday Night: A 30 percent chance of rain, mainly after 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38. Calm wind becoming east around 5 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Monday: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 10am. Partly sunny, with a high near 60. North northwest wind around 6 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 36. North northeast wind around 5 mph.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 59.

It will be sunny. I promise.

Both yesterday and today saw unexpected showery weather move through. Yesterday Chico received .04", while today's light showers produced .06". Other than a slight lingering chance of showers this evening, this should be the last of the wet weather for awhile. This weekend looks gorgeous, but beware some subfreezing morning low temperatures in certain areas. Otherwise, enjoy the sunshine and mild weather! Here is the detailed forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: A 20 percent chance of showers before 10pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 39. North northwest wind between 3 and 5 mph.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 62. North northwest wind between 7 and 13 mph.

Friday Night: Patchy fog after 4am. Otherwise, clear, with a low around 33. North northwest wind between 6 and 8 mph.

dry, with near seasonable temperatures

Today was a rather uneventful weather day in Chico, with mostly cloudy skies and high temps in the mid 50s. In other words, a typical January day. Expect partly cloudy skies and mild daytime highs the next seven days, as many of the storms coming in off the Pacific move into the Pacific Northwest. Boring, ho-hum weather, as I like to call it. Here are the details of Chico's dull weather forecast for the next seven days, courtesy of the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37. Light east wind.

Wednesday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 60. North northwest wind between 3 and 5 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38. North wind around 6 mph.

still a go for wet weather

This storm is slow-moving and has been delayed somewhat. Instead of feeling its impacts this afternoon, Chico should begin seeing rain right around or just after midnight tonight. The rain will be moderate to heavy at times, and the wind should pick up, especially during the day tomorrow. Rainfall amounts in the Sacramento Valley will range from a half an inch to an inch over the next 24 hours, and wind speeds will be around 15-25 mph. Snow levels could initially start around 3000 feet but rise rapidly to 6000 feet tomorrow. Nine to twelve inches of snow is possible above 6000 feet, while two feet (yes, you read that correctly) should fall above 7000 feet during the next 24 to 36 hours. Keep in mind, this is just the first of three storms to affect our area through this weekend. More rain, mountain snow, and wind will come in late Friday/ early Saturday, while the third storm is scheduled to arrive by Sunday and linger into Monday. Chico could end up with nearly five inches of rain over the next five days! We need it! Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Rain. Low around 41. Southeast wind between 11 and 14 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

I love stormy weather

The rain will be returning by tomorrow afternoon in the Chico area, but not before we endure another cold night with lows in the 20s. This morning's low temperature at the Chico Airport was a bone-chilling 19 degrees! What's more unusual were the dewpoints last night and into early this morning- in the single digits! It was quite dry out there. The moisture will quickly return by tomorrow, and moderate to heavy rainfall is expected Thursday, Friday, and again on Sunday as three big storms are lined up and ready to roar into our area. Snow levels may initially start out low- perhaps as low as around 1800 feet Wednesday night before milder Pacific air moves the snow level up to over 4000 feet by later Thursday. Several feet of snow are possible above 5000 feet between Thursday and Sunday. This is all good news as we need this precipitation. The bad news is we may see a lot of precip in a short amount of time, resulting in isolated flooding. Also, winds will be gusting to over 30 and perhaps 40 mph over the next few days. Make sure to tie down any loose objects in your yard. Whew! Lots going on! Here's the detailed forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 28. Southeast wind around 6 mph.

Wednesday: A 40 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 46. Southeast wind between 7 and 14 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Wednesday Night: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 34. East southeast wind between 11 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday: Rain. High near 47. Southeast wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Thursday Night: Rain. Low around 35. Southeast wind between 10 and 16 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Friday: Rain. High near 53. Chance of precipitation is 100%.

Friday Night: Rain. Low around 36. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

cold weather followed by wet and windy weather

There is a Hard Freeze Watch in effect for tomorrow night into early Tuesday for the Sacramento Valley, including Chico. Low temperatures early Tuesday morning may dip into the mid 20s. Cover up any tender vegetation and bring the potted plants in. Turn a drip on faucets and make sure your pets are indoors. By Wednesday, a series of wet and windy storms are poised to march through our area. The wet weather may last into early next week. This is good news as we are seriously behind on rainfall and snowfall. Here is the detailed forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Patchy frost after 4am. Otherwise, partly cloudy, with a low around 28. North northwest wind between 15 and 20 mph.

stormy for the end of the week

From the National Weather Service:

AFTER A PROLONGED DRY PERIOD TO BEGIN THE RAINY SEASON...FORECAST
CHARTS ARE SHOWING A CHANGE IN THE WEATHER PATTERN THAT WOULD GIVE
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BENEFICIAL RAIN AND SNOW.

A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM DROPPING SOUTHWARD OUT OF THE GULF OF ALASKA
TODAY INTO EARLY MONDAY WILL ONLY GIVE THE REGION A GLANCING
BLOW. THIS WILL BRING AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES BACK DOWN TO NEAR OR
BELOW NORMAL FOR TODAY AND MONDAY. ONLY LIGHT PRECIPITATION IS
POSSIBLE OVER THE MOUNTAINS THIS AFTERNOON INTO EARLY MONDAY.

HOWEVER...A MORE SUBSTANTIAL PATTERN CHANGE MAY DEVELOP TOWARD
THE MIDDLE TO LATTER PART OF THIS WEEK BRINGING A SERIES OF WET
STORMS INTO INTERIOR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. THE JET STREAM MAY BRING
SYSTEMS INTO INTERIOR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA ALONG WITH A MOISTURE
PLUME FOR POSSIBLE MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN FOR LATE IN THE WEEK.

ALTHOUGH THE MORE SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN THE WEATHER PATTERN ARE
STILL A FEW DAYS AWAY AND PROJECTIONS CAN CHANGE...THERE IS NOW A
HIGH DEGREE OF CONFIDENCE THAT THIS TRANSITION TO A MORE WINTER
LIKE WEATHER PATTERN WILL OCCUR BRINGING RAIN...MOUNTAIN
SNOW...COOLER DAYTIME TEMPERATURES AND OCCASIONALLY GUSTY WINDS.

rain looks likely next week

Yesterday was yet another in a string of dry and warm days in Chico, as the high temperature made it into the mid 60s. Expect cooler weather this weekend as a cold front slides to our north. We won't see any precipitation from this front, but it will tug at some colder air from the north, pulling it down into our area. This isn't an Arctic blast by any means, but temperatures will be cooler than what we've seen. The bigger weather pattern shift will occur next week. Forecast models continue to favor the jet stream moving southward, allowing storms to be steered our way. It is several days out, so this forecast warrants caution. However, we could see potentially strong storms by the end of next week packing heavy rain, mountain snow, and gusty winds. Stay tuned. For now, here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Today: Patchy frost before 10am. Otherwise, sunny, with a high near 61. Light and variable wind.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 33. Light east wind.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 56. South southeast wind between 5 and 7 mph.

Sunday Night: Patchy frost after 4am. Otherwise, partly cloudy, with a low around 26. West southwest wind between 5 and 7 mph.

M.L.King Day: Patchy frost before 10am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 52. North northwest wind around 9 mph.

Monday Night: Patchy frost after 10pm. Otherwise, partly cloudy, with a low around 25.

Tuesday: Patchy frost before 10am. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 53.

Tuesday Night: A slight chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 32.

potential pattern shift?

Wow, has it been warm in Chico the past few days, with high temperatures pushing the 70 degree mark. Not record territory, but close. It continues to be dry and mild, but this weather pattern could change by the middle of next week. Computer forecast models show a dip in the jet stream around Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, possibly steering stormy weather our way. We'll have to wait and see, but for now it looks promising that we'll get at least some precipitation next week. For now, expect a continuation of the warm and sunny weather we've been experiencing. Here are the details from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Areas of frost after 1am. Otherwise, mostly clear, with a low around 29. Light northwest wind.

Friday: Areas of frost before 10am. Otherwise, sunny, with a high near 62. Light north northwest wind.

will we ever see rain again?

I'm beginning to wonder. Logic dictates that, yes, we will see rain again, but when? Certainly not in the near future, as high pressure is anchored over California and refuses to budge. Currently it's overcast in Chico as a very weak front crosses over us. There is no precipitation with it, however. The sun should return later this afternoon and temperatures should reach the 60 degree mark- about five degrees above the average for this date. Expect dry conditions and mild temps to continue for the next seven days. I may have to do a rain dance soon! Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

This Afternoon: Partly sunny, with a high near 61. Light north northwest wind.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 33. Calm wind becoming north between 4 and 7 mph.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 62. North northwest wind between 6 and 8 mph.

another day of spring-like weather

Yesterday was beautiful in Chico, with abundant sunshine and temperatures in the mid-60s. It was breezy, but the winds stayed below Wind Advisory criteria. Northwest winds were clocked around 20-25 mph for the most part yesterday. warm and dry weather continues

This is becoming a disturbing trend- warm, dry weather at the peak of the rainy season. January, on average, is the wettest month of the year for Chico. However, there is no rain in sight for at least the next seven days. Plus, wildfires (!) are a concern this weekend as strong northwesterly winds blow, warming and drying out the air. Wildfire concerns in January- who'd have thought? The forecast is pretty simple for the next week: sunny, mild days and clear, chilly nights. High temperatures will hover in the low to mid 60s, while lows will bottom out around freezing (32 degrees Fahrenheit, or 0 degrees Celcius). Oh, well. At least you can get out and do some outdoor activities this weekend!

more of the same

Today's high temperature in Chico reached 65 degrees, 11 degrees above average. There's more of this type of weather to come, so if you like March weather in January, you're in for a treat. If you want rain, my apologies. No rain is in the forecast for the forseeable future. I tell you, we're going to be in real trouble if we don't get some precipitation soon. There is virtually no snowpack in the mountains right now, and millions of people in this state rely on snowpack for their water supply. It's becoming worrisome. Here is Chico's dry and mild forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Patchy dense fog after 10pm. Otherwise, partly cloudy, with a low around 35. Light north northwest wind.

Wednesday: Patchy dense fog before 10am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 61. Calm wind.

Wednesday Night: Patchy fog after 10pm. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 36. Calm wind.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 34. North northwest wind around 6 mph.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 59.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 33.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 60.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 33.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 59.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 32.
