a heat wave is coming

First, I'd like to issue a correction. In my previous post I mentioned that Chico averages around an inch of precipitation in June. Wrong- according to The Weather Channel, Chico averages only .47 inches in June. Between Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning, Chico reveived 1.25 inches of rain- that is a record for June! The clouds and rain are but a distant memory now, and the heat will begin in earnest tomorrow. High temperatures will soar from the mid 80s today to the upper 90s tomorrow. It'll stay in the upper 90s for Saturday and break 100 degrees (for the first time this year) by Sunday. Right now it looks like triple digit heat will occur every day from Sunday through next Thursday, making it a bona fide heat wave. Be safe this holiday weekend; if doing any outdoor activities, especially on or near the water, remember the water temps are still quite chilly and area creeks and rivers are full and running swiftly due to recent snowmelt. As far as Fourth of July events happening this weekend, check out the Chico Outlaws baseball team as they host Edmonton all this weekend at Nettleton Stadium on the Chico State campus. On Monday evening, stick around after the game for a fireworks spectacular. Also on Monday the Fourth, Chico will have its community Fourth of July celebration in Lower Bidwell Park all day. Fireworks displays will occur Monday evening at Lake Oroville and at the Silver Dollar Speedway after the races. Also, the Friday Night Concerts in the Park resume beginning tomorrow night at the Dowtown Plaza in Chico. The Chico Community Band will be playing tomorrow evening beginning at 7 pm. Go check them out! Have a happy and safe Fourth of July weekend! Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

very unusual rainfall for Northern California

Record-breaking daily rainfall rates have been measured today across Northern California due to this potent Pacific storm. major change to the forecast

I just got back into town, and I understand there will be some major changes to the weather across Northern California this upcoming week. An exceptionally strong area of low pressure is gathering strength in the Eastern Pacific and will come charging into our region Tuesday and linger into Wednesday. Rainfall amounts from one-third to one-half of an inch will fall in the Central and Northern Sacramento Valley, while snow (yes, snow) will fall above 8000' in the northern Sierra Nevada mountains Tuesday night and Wednesday. We can't rule out an isolated thunderstorm in the valley and foothills Tuesday afternoon. High temperatures will only make it to around 70 degrees (nearly 20 degrees below average) on Tuesday, and mid 70s for Wednesday. However, this cool period will be brief; expect to see temps climb to around 100 degrees by the Fourth of July weekend. Hot as a firecracker for the Fourth? It looks likely! Here are the details for Chico on this upcoming weather pattern shift from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Clear, with a low around 58. West southwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming east.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 92. Light wind becoming south southeast between 12 and 15 mph. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph.

Monday Night: Increasing clouds, with a low around 61. South southeast wind between 15 and 21 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph.

Tuesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 11am. Cloudy, with a high near 71. South southeast wind between 18 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

what a difference a week will make

After a scorching 96 degrees yesterday, a forecast high of 100 later this afternoon (current temperature in Chico is 96 degrees), and another 100 degree day tomorrow, temps will take a nosedive and by this time next week we'll be lucky to see 80 degrees! We just have to get through the next few days before the cooling trend (relatively speaking, of course) begins. High temps will hover in the mid 90s for Thursday and Friday before falling below 90 degrees for the weekend. Look for highs in the mid 80s for next Monday, and that nice 80 degree high for next Tuesday. Lovely! Low temps will also cool down, from the upper 60s tonight to the upper 50s by early next week. Normal high and low temps for Chico for this time of year are 89 and 58, respectively. We'll be above average through the end of the week, and then below average beginning the latter half of the weekend. Not a drop of rain is expected, but that's normal for these parts during the summer. Just gotta get through the heat! Here's the detailed seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Clear, with a low around 67. South wind at 7 mph becoming northeast.

hot for the first week of summer

Today was sunny but warm, with gusty northwesterly winds to 25 mph and a high temperature of 92 degrees. It looks like we're going to see triple digit heat at least two days out of this week as high pressure builds over the West Coast. It also looks like the heat won't last very long, as we'll return to the upper 80s by next weekend. Don't forget, the first day of summer is Tuesday! Here's the detailed seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Clear, with a low around 60. North northwest wind between 8 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.

perhaps not as hot as expected

Don't get me wrong, it'll still be hot next week. However, no triple digit heat is forecast to occur. We'll get close to the century mark on the first official day of summer (Tuesday), with a high of 98 degrees. That looks to be the hottest day of the next seven, and the weekend looks warm (for Chico standards, anyway), but not too bad with the typically low humidity. Also, a reminder to still be careful around rivers and streams in the area, as they are still running high and fast. Don't even think about swimming in them, as water temps are only in the lower 50s. There's a risk of being swept away by the rapidly moving current, especially if you're not an experienced swimmer. Otherwise, enjoy the weekend! Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 60. South southeast wind between 4 and 7 mph becoming calm.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 90. Calm wind becoming south between 5 and 8 mph.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 61. South wind 5 to 7 mph becoming north northwest.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 91. North northwest wind between 10 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

Sunday Night: Clear, with a low around 60. North northwest wind between 8 and 10 mph.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 95.

Monday Night: Clear, with a low around 64.

Tuesday: Sunny and hot, with a high near 98.

hot weather

Yesterday's high temperature in Chico was 95 degrees; today's high (so far) is 96 degrees (aided by gusty downsloping winds from the northwest). Can you say "hot?" In fact, today is now the hottest day of the year for Chico. But wait, it's going to get hotter. Not right away; in fact, this weekend looks fairly nice, with sunny skies and seasonable temps in the mid 80s. However, by Tuesday of next week (coincidentally, the first day of summer), high temps will reach the century mark. That's right- we could see our first 100 degree day of the year. So, if you thought yesterday and today were hot, just wait! Low temps tonight through the weekend will be in the mid 50s to around 60 degrees. Lows will warm up into the upper 60s to lower 70s by early next week. Warm and sultry at night- hot and stifling during the day. Summer must be here! Here's the seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Clear, with a low around 60. North northwest wind between 8 and 13 mph.

mini heat wave

I say mini because it will only last a couple of days. However, we will see temps in the mid 90s in Chico and other valley locations tomorrow and Wednesday. Temps will cool a bit to around average late in the week. Dry, sunny days and mild, starry nights will be the rule the next seven days. There is some concern over flooding near some rivers and streams due to the rapid warm up. Snowmelt will accelerate the next several days, and that could pose flooding problems in some areas. If you live near a river or stream, keep an eye out for rising waters. Also, these waters are very chilly (water temps in some rivers and streams are averaging in the low 50s), so don't be tempted to swim in them when the temps heat up. Besides, with the swiftly running water, it's simply too dangerous to swim right now. Keep this in mind when enjoying the outdoors this week. Here is the seven day Chico forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Clear, with a low around 61. North northwest wind between 3 and 7 mph.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 94. North northwest wind between 7 and 9 mph.

Tuesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 64. Calm wind becoming north between 4 and 7 mph.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 94. North northwest wind between 9 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 58. North northwest wind around 7 mph.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 88.

Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 58.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 87.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 58.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 84.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 59.

sunny and very warm this upcoming week

It has been warm the past couple of days in Chico, with Thursday's high temperature reaching 89 degrees and yesterday's high at 86 degrees. Chico should be right around 86-87 degrees for mid- June , so it hasn't been too terribly hot lately. Dry, sunny weather should continue the next seven days (as is typical this time of year). High temps this weekend should be nice- mainly in the upper 70s to lower 80s due to marine air coming in from the Delta to our south. Next week looks very warm, with highs creeping into the upper 80s to around 90 degrees. All in all, though, not too hot for this time of year. The all time record high temperature for June in Chico (unofficially) is 115 degrees, so I'll take highs in the low 90s over 115 degrees any day! Enjoy the weekend! Here's the latest seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Today: Partly sunny, with a high near 79. South wind around 7 mph.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 55. South southeast wind between 6 and 9 mph becoming calm.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 81. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 58. South wind at 5 mph becoming east northeast.

finally... some nice weather!

Today's high temperature in Chico was 80 degrees under mostly sunny skies. Clouds have been restricted to the nearby Coast Range and Sierra Nevada mountain ranges today. After an extended period of chilly, gray, and wet weather, it looks like summer may have finally arrived to the Northstate! Sunny days and clear nights will dominate the forecast the next seven days. High temperatures will be mainly in the 80s (with upper 80s to near 90 degrees by the end of this week), while lows will be mainly in the 50s to around 60 degrees. With the fairly quick warming of temps, there's a risk of flooding due to rapid snowmelt in the mountains. Of course, many of our streams and rivers originate in the mountains, where the snowmelt will feed these already swollen bodies of water. Be careful when in and near creeks and rivers this week! While it will be warm, and the cool waters tempting, these rivers and streams are running high and fast (and cold!). Avoid swimming in these waters! It just isn't safe at this time. Be careful while having fun and enjoy this nice weather! Here's the seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 56. West wind around 6 mph becoming east.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 82. Calm wind becoming west around 6 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 58. Calm wind becoming east around 6 mph.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 87. North northwest wind between 6 and 10 mph.

Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 60. Light and variable wind.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 88.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 61.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 84.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 60.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 82.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 61.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 82.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 60.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 84.

showery today and Monday; nice the rest of the week

From the National Weather Service:

A COLD FOR THE SEASON LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM CONTINUES TO SPIN OFF
THE CALIFORNIA COAST. THE SYSTEM HAS BROUGHT ROUGHLY HALF OF AN
INCH OF RAIN TO THE SACRAMENTO AND NORTHERN SAN JOAQUIN VALLEYS...
WITH HIGHER TOTALS TOWARDS THE COASTAL RANGES. WHILE THE FRONTAL
SYSTEM WILL GRADUALLY WEAKEN...EXPECT SHOWERS TO CONTINUE THROUGH
TONIGHT. SNOW LEVELS ARE AT AROUND 8000 FEET AND SHOULD REMAIN ABOVE
THE INTERSTATE 80 AND HIGHWAY 50 PASS LEVELS THROUGH MOST OF TODAY
BEFORE LOWERING LATER TONIGHT INTO TOMORROW MORNING.

THE MAIN UPPER LOW IS FORECAST TO MOVE INLAND LATE TONIGHT AND
MONDAY BRINGING A CONTINUED SHOWER THREAT ESPECIALLY TO THE
SIERRA. THUNDERSTORMS MAY ALSO BE POSSIBLE ACROSS THE REGION
THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. THE COLD AIR ASSOCIATED WITH THE
LOW WILL BRING DOWN SNOW LEVELS BETWEEN 6500-7000 FEET AND PASS
LEVELS OF THE SIERRA CASCADE RANGE COULD SEE AN ADDITIONAL SEVERAL
INCHES OF SNOWFALL LATE TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY AFTERNOON. IF
TRAVELING TO OR THROUGH THE SIERRA CASCADE RANGE TODAY
THROUGH MONDAY...CARRY TIRE CHAINS AND COLD WEATHER SUPPLIES AND
BE PREPARED TO ENCOUNTER INCLEMENT WEATHER.

DAYTIME HIGH TEMPERATURES THROUGH THE WEEKEND WILL RUN BETWEEN 10 AND
20 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR UNDER THE COOL AIR
MASS. NEAR RECORD LOW MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES ARE POSSIBLE.

So yes, it will be rather soggy today and tomorrow (hopefully nothing like yesterday). However, from Tuesday all the way into next week, look for sunny skies and high temps in the upper 70s to mid 80s. Yesterday it was grey and gloomy all day, and Chico saw .35 of an inch of rain. That is almost unheard of in June, as we normally are well into our dry season by this time of year. Unfortunately, since Chico does not have an official weather reporting station (and thus, no official record keeping), I don't know if yesterday's rainfall amount was a record for the date. I'm sure other cities across northern California had some record rainfall yesterday. Temperatures were stuck in the 50s to lower 60s for much of the day yesterday. The sun did manage to peek through the clouds briefly late yesterday afternoon, but the clouds soon returned, along with some scattered rain showers right around sunset. Currently as I type this it is partly sunny at my house, but 1300 feet below me, the Sacramento valley looks shrouded in fog and low clouds. It may be another weird weather day!

dreary weekend ahead

In fact, with the exception of today, this whole week has been dreary. Yesterday was particularly awful, with off-and-on rain showers and scattered thunderstorms. The high temperature in Chico yesterday was just 58 degrees- 27 degrees below average! Today was somewhat better- we managed to see more sunshine and a high of 68 degrees. Unfortunately, a low pressure system dropping south from the Gulf of Alaska will bring back showers into our forecast this weekend. Along with the showers, cooler than normal temps will be the rule. Forecast highs will only be in the 60s to around 70 degrees Friday through next Tuesday. The weather should improve (fingers crossed) by Tuesday, and temps should warm up to near 80 degrees by the middle of next week. Usually by this time of year Chico would see its first 100 degree day. Not this year. At this rate, we may not see 90 degree weather until July! Some area happenings this weekend: the Saturday Farmer's Market in downtown Chico from 7am until 1pm (on Saturday, of course); opening nights for three area theater companies: The Blue Room presents "The Hard Dick" (no, it's not what you think), "Superior Donuts" at Chico Cabaret, and "I Love Piano" at the Theatre On The Ridge in Paradise; and the Oroville Art Tour on Saturday beginning at 10 am. For more info, check out the Chico News and Review. Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:
