very unusual rainfall for Northern California

Record-breaking daily rainfall rates have been measured today across Northern California due to this potent Pacific storm. So far in Chico, the unofficial rainfall tally is .87 inches as of 4 pm today. We normally see just over an inch of precipitation on average for the entire month of June! The high temperature in Chico was reached just after midnight this morning, when it was 70 degrees. The temperature fell throughout the day to 60 degrees until mid-afternoon, when the mercury climbed to 62 degrees (which is the current temperature). Showers will persist tonight and into the day tomorrow before tapering off late tomorrow afternoon. The sunshine returns for Thursday along with the heat as temps rapidly rise to above the century mark by this weekend. Forecast high temps for the Fourth will hover around 102-105 degrees! Summer returns with a vengeance! Here's the specific seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 11pm, then showers likely. Low around 55. South southeast wind between 3 and 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. South southeast wind between 6 and 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 55. South wind at 6 mph becoming east.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 89. Calm wind becoming west around 6 mph.

Thursday Night: Clear, with a low around 58.

Friday: Sunny and hot, with a high near 97.

Friday Night: Clear, with a low around 62.

Saturday: Sunny and hot, with a high near 97.

Saturday Night: Clear, with a low around 64.

Sunday: Sunny and hot, with a high near 101.

Sunday Night: Clear, with a low around 65.

Independence Day: Sunny and hot, with a high near 103.
