stormy today; sunny tomorrow

This weekend is a study in contrasts, as today will be winter-like and unsettled, while tomorrow will be calm and sunny. A strong frontal system is moving through Northern California today, bringing showers and very gusty winds. A Wind Advisory is up for the Sacramento Valley (including Chico) until 7 pm this evening for wind gusts to 55 mph. This can make driving difficult and may also bring down some tree limbs. If you haven't done so already, tie down and secure any loose objects in your yard. There won't be much rain with this storm, so expect mainly showers throughout today. There is a chance of thunderstorms this afternoon once the cold front swings through and the actual low pressure system behind the front hovers over the area. Some storms could produce lightning and small hail. In the mountains, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Sierra Nevada through tomorrow morning. A foot or more of snow is expected as heavy snow is likely to fall. Carry a winter survival kit in your vehicle if you must travel in the mountains today. Once this storm passes, sunny skies will return. Tomorrow will still be blustery, but the winds will shift from the southeast today to the northwest tomorow. Sunshine will stick around for the first part of next week, but weak storms could brush our area Tuesday through next Friday. Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Today: Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 11am. Some of the storms could produce small hail. Temperature falling to around 51 by 10am. Windy, with a south southeast wind between 24 and 30 mph, with gusts as high as 48 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tonight: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 11pm, then a chance of showers. Some of the storms could produce small hail and gusty winds. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 41. Breezy, with a south wind between 19 and 22 mph becoming calm. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 61. North northwest wind between 8 and 13 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 41. North northwest wind between 5 and 7 mph.

Today has been wet and breezy in Chico, with nearly an inch of rain falling, as well as winds gusting to over 25 mph. Temperatures have been stuck in the 50s all day, well below our average high of 69 degrees. More rain is on the way, along with more snow for the Sierra Nevada. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the northern Sierra Nevada through tomorrow afternoon. Up to a foot of new snow is expected above 6000 feet through tomorrow. rainy for much of the next seven days

Again, is it winter or spring? This weekend is not going to be conducive (or the weather cooperative) to outdoor activities. It will be chilly, breezy, and showery later today, tonight, and the first half of tomorrow. The sun may peek through the clouds tomorrow afternoon, but that will cause instability, which then may lead to thunderstorm activity. We usually don't see much in the way of severe weather in these parts, but small hail and lightning may pose a danger with some storms that do pop up tomorrow afternoon. Expect more rain midweek as another powerful storm takes aim at Northern California. If traveling to the mountains to do some late season skiing, expect snow above 3000 feet and wind gusts to 50 mph. Hazardous travel conditions are expected in the mountains this weekend. Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Today: A 50 percent chance of rain, mainly after 11am. Cloudy, with a high near 52. South southeast wind between 11 and 14 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tonight: Rain. Low around 39. South southwest wind at 6 mph becoming east northeast. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday: Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 11am. Some of the storms could produce small hail. High near 54. South wind between 5 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Sunday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce small hail. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41. South southeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Monday: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 58. Calm wind becoming south southeast between 5 and 8 mph.

not as wet as previously forecast?

It now looks like valley locations will receive mainly light precipitation and the mountains will be impacted the most. From the National Weather Service office in Sacramento:

PERIODS OF LIGHT TO MODERATE PRECIPITATION WILL BEGIN LATE TONIGHT
IN THE COASTAL AND NORTHERN MOUNTAINS THEN SPREAD ACROSS MOST
LOCATIONS ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY.

THE HEAVIEST PRECIPITATION WILL FALL ALONG THE COASTAL
RANGE AS THE STORM MOVES SOUTHWARD HUGGING THE CALIFORNIA
COASTLINE. HOWEVER...THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF LASSEN PARK AND FAR
NORTHERN SIERRA NEVADA MOUNTAINS WILL ALSO BE IMPACTED WITH
NOTABLE PRECIPITATION ALONG WITH THE NORTHERN SACRAMENTO VALLEY. SNOW
LEVELS WILL GENERALLY RANGE FROM 3000 TO 4000 FEET ALONG THE
COASTAL RANGE WITH HEAVIEST SNOW TOTALS ABOVE 6000 FEET...REACHING 7 TO
10 INCHES. SNOW LEVELS ACROSS THE LASSEN PARK/SIERRA NEVADA REGION
FORECAST AT 4000 TO 5000 FEET WITH SNOW TOTALS AROUND 4 TO 7
INCHES...UP TO 10 INCHES NEAR LASSEN PEAK. MOUNTAIN WINDS WILL BE
BREEZY WITH OCCASIONAL GUSTS UP TO 40 TO 50 MPH...LOCALLY HIGHER
ACROSS RIDGETOPS.

PRIMARY STORM IMPACT WILL BE HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS IN THE
MOUNTAINS.

ADDITIONAL PERIODS OF PRECIPITATION ARE EXPECTED THROUGH THE
FOLLOWING WORKWEEK.

wet and breezy weekend

This weather is frustrating me. We had spring in winter and now are having winter weather in spring. It's a head-scratcher, that's for sure. Today has been breezy but mild in Chico, with sunny periods followed by brief showers, and then back to sunny breaks. The high temperature in Chico today was 63 degrees, a good eight degrees below the average. Get ready for some wet and breezy weather beginning Saturday and lasting into Sunday. A potent weather system will move into Northern California late Friday night, bringing moderate to heavy precipitation into our area by early Saturday. Valley locations could see anywhere from a half an inch to an inch of rain, while the Sierra Nevada could see over six inches of snow above 5000 feet. I'll update my blog as new information becomes available. For now, here's the seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

cool and showery

It has been cool and mainly cloudy the past couple of days in Chico. Yesterday's high temperature was in the low 50s, and currently it's a relatively chilly 57 degrees. Normally this time of year we'd see temps in the lower 70s. We won't come near that the next seven days, as a trough of cool air hangs over Northern California. There will also be off-and-on showers and rain in addition to the below normal temperatures. In other words, not a pleasant spring break. Here is the detailed seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 47. South southeast wind around 6 mph becoming calm.

Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 65. Calm wind becoming southeast between 7 and 10 mph.

Wednesday Night: Rain likely, mainly after 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 48. South southeast wind between 8 and 14 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

a rather chilly spring break

Today was very chilly and unsettled in the Chico area. High temps were stuck in the low to mid 50s, and a thunderstorm brought hail and heavy rain to Chico (and snow to the foothills) earlier this afternoon. It snowed briefly at my house, but there was no accumulation as the ground was too warm. Expect much of this upcoming week to be unsettled and chillier than normal. This weather is more reminiscent of February than March. We may have a repeat of last year, in which a mild winter was followed by a chilly, wet spring. We'll have to see. Here is Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8pm. Some of the storms could produce small hail. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37. South wind at 7 mph becoming north.

Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 55. Calm wind becoming south southeast around 5 mph.

Monday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly after 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41. Southeast wind between 5 and 13 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tuesday: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 56. East southeast wind between 10 and 13 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tuesday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers before 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45. East southeast wind around 6 mph becoming calm.

Wednesday: A 20 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 65.

Wednesday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 47.

Thursday: A chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 64.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44.

Friday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 61.

Friday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 43.

Saturday: A chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 59.

Saturday Night: A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 40.

Sunday: A chance of rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 60.

calming down a bit

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Chico has received 2.76" of rain since last Monday, which brings the season total since last July 1st to 14.72 inches. That is about seven inches below where we should be at this point in the season. Still, this past week's storms did put a dent in our drought, especially for the mountain snowpack. Some parts of the Sierra Nevada received nearly eight feet of snow! The weather will begin to calm down a bit as we head into this weekend and next week. There will still be some on-and-off pop-up showers, but no deluge like we had earlier this week. Winds should also lessen, but temperatures will stay below normal the next seven days. Chico normally sees high temps in the upper 60s for the middle of March; however, forecast highs will only be in the mid 50s to mid 60s today through next Friday. This next week is spring break for Chico State students, and I'm sure many of the students and faculty will be off to warmer climes. For those staying in the area, keep a jacket and umbrella handy if doing any outdoor activities. Here is the detailed seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Today: A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11am. Partly sunny, with a high near 55. East wind at 8 mph becoming west northwest. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37. Northwest wind between 4 and 7 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Sunday: A 40 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 54. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Sunday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly after 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph.

Monday: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 56. South southeast wind around 6 mph.

Monday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41.

Tuesday: A 30 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 59.

Tuesday Night: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44.

Wednesday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 65.

Wednesday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 47.

Thursday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 63.

Friday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 65.

Oh, the Flood Advisory for small stream and urban flooding is still in effect until 2:30 pm this afternoon. Keep an eye on those creeks if you live near one, and be careful driving through water-covered roadways. Like the National Weather Service says: "Turn around, don't drown."

even more rain on the way

Chico has received over two inches of rain since Monday, and more is on the way. Two storms are lined up: one will arrive later tonight and linger into tomorrow, while the second is close on its heels and will invade tomorrow night. The first storm is a warm one, so snow levels will be higher. Warmer air is already flowing in, and area creeks and streams are running higher than normal due to snow melt runoff. Snow levels will lower with the second, colder storm, and we could see accumulating snow in Paradise and Forest Ranch by Saturday morning. Stay tuned for more details as events unfold. Gusty winds will accompany these storms, so eexpect gusts to nearly 40 mph over the next 24-36 hours. The weather should calm down by early next week. For now, here is the (mainly) stormy forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Rain. Low around 51. Breezy, with a south southeast wind between 20 and 24 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Friday: Rain. High near 59. South southeast wind between 15 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Saturday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce small hail. Partly sunny, with a high near 52. Calm wind becoming northwest between 5 and 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

more storminess on the way

Chico has seen over half an inch of rain today, along with a peak wind gust at the airport of 39 mph around 4 am. Rain will taper to showers overnight and into tomorrow before two more storms affect our area. The first of the next two storms will hit on Thursday, and the second on Friday. Winds and rain with these next two storms won't be as intense as with our current storm. However, still expect wind gusts to nearly 30 mph late this week and rain totals to range from a quarter to a half an inch Thursday and Friday. Showers and possibly a thunderstorm will be around for both Saturday and Sunday. Low elevation snow (possibly below 2000 feet) is possible this weekend; again, snow amounts are up in the air right now. Check back for updates as I will keep on top of the forecasts. For now, here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Rain. Low around 45. South southeast wind between 5 and 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 57. Southeast wind between 5 and 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday Night: Showers likely, mainly after 11pm. Cloudy, with a low around 46. Southeast wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

two major storms expected this week

The first storm will impact our area beginning late tonight and linger through Wednesday. This storm will bring with it 1-3" of rain to the valley, while elevations above 6500 feet in the Sierra will see 2-4 FEET of snow! And this is just through Wednesday! A second storm arriving Friday will bring just as much moisture, but the second one will be colder than the first. That means snow levels down to the foothills by Saturday. Right now it's too soon to know if any accumulating snows will occur in the foothills, so stay tuned. First, we have to get through this first storm. A Wind Advisory is in effect for the Sacramento Valley and adjacent foothills through 5 pm tomorrow (Tuesday). Expect sustained winds from the southeast between 25-35 mph, and gusts to 55 mph. still expecting stormy weather

It will be showery today, with mainly scattered off-and-on type showers, along with breezy conditions. A brief lull will occur tonight into most of the day tomorrow before a much stronger storm moves into our area tomorrow night. This storm will bring occasional heavy rain and gusty southeasterly winds to Chico. The mountains will see heavy snow and whiteout conditions above 4500-5000 feet tomorrow night and into Tuesday. A Winter Storm Watch has been posted for the Sierra Nevada mountains above 4500 feet. By Wednesday, another powerful storm will affect the region, bringing more heavy rain and strong winds, along with snow above 5000 feet. Each successive storm will be warmer than the previous one, causing snow levels to rise above 7000 feet by late in the week. Snow amounts between tomorrow and Friday could be in excess of five feet above 6000-7000 feet in elevation. Rainfall amounts in the valley this week could total 3-4 inches. Wind gusts at times in the valley could reach tropical storm force strength (39 mph), while gusts in the mountains could exceed 60 mph. If traveling to the mountains, pack a winter survival kit; travel will be treacherous this upcoming week. Here is Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

unsettled weather for the next several days

Enjoy today's mild, dry weather, for it's going to be wet and windy for the next several days beginning tomorrow. Forecast computer models continue to indicate several potent storms moving through our area, with the first arriving tomorrow. The first one will be a relatively weak storm, with light precipitation amounts. Winds will be breezy tomorrow, with southerly winds up to 20 mph. A more powerful storm arrives Monday night into Tuesday, and several more storms are ready to take aim at us as the work week progresses. Precipitation amounts for the valley between tomorrow and next Friday are estimated at between 3-5 inches. The Sierra Nevada will see several feet of snow (good news for skiers!). However, the snow is expected to be heavier and wetter than what we've seen so far this season, so maybe not so good news for skiers. I'm not a skier, but I imagine for good skiing conditions lighter and more powdery is best. Anyway, expect heavy rain at times and strong, gusty winds this next week. Urban flooding and power outages are likely, so be prepared. I love this kind of weather! Here's the detailed forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Today: Partly sunny, with a high near 67. Calm wind becoming south southeast between 5 and 8 mph.

Tonight: A 20 percent chance of rain after 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 43. Southeast wind between 9 and 13 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Sunday: A 50 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 62. Southeast wind between 11 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Sunday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41. Southeast wind around 9 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Monday: A 50 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 60. Southeast wind between 8 and 16 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

Monday Night: Rain. Low around 42. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Tuesday: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 58. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Tuesday Night: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 44.

Wednesday: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 58.

Wednesday Night: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 46.

Thursday: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 60.

Thursday Night: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 42.

Also, don't forget to set your clocks forward one hour before going to bed tonight. Daylight Savings Time begins at 2 am local time Sunday morning.

Wind Advisory in effect beginning tomorrow

It's going to be quite windy tomorrow with the passage of this next cold front. This is a quick- moving storm, so there will be about a six hour window when we will see mostly light rain beginning late tonight. By sunrise tomorrow, most of the precipitation will be out of here, and winds should start to pick up from the northwest around mid- morning tomorrow. The Wind Advisory runs from 10 am tomorrow and lasts until 10 am Wednesday. Winds are expected to be sustained around 20-25 mph and gust to near 40 mph. It will definitely be a Bad Hair Day Alert kind of day. A Winter Weather Advisory is up for the Sierra Nevada from tonight through tomorrow morning, mainly above 3500 feet. About 5-10 inches of snow are possible in the highest elevations of the Sierra, so plan accordingly if your travels take you through the mountains. Once this storm passes and the winds die down, expect sunny and calm weather through this weekend. Highs will be about average- mainly mid to upper 60s from Wednesday through next Monday. However, it will be chilly tomorrow- low 50s is all we'll muster, so bundle up against that wind! Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Breezy, with a north northwest wind 18 to 21 mph increasing to between 26 and 29 mph. Winds could gust as high as 37 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

a change in the weather is coming

This weekend's weather has been, in a word, spectacular. Yesterday's high temperatures were in the mid- to upper- 60s, while this afternoon's temps have ranged from the lower 70s at the Chico Airport to the upper 70s at the Chico State Farm. All of the flowering trees- such as the plum, cherry, pear, and apple- are in full bloom, and the grass in the foothills east of town is turning an emerald green. The California poppies ar blooming, as well, providing a splash of orange color. Spring is bustin' out all over! However, this warm weather will be coming to a brief end as a strong cold front works its way south from the Gulf of Alaska. Not much precipitation will be with this system- mainly colder air and gusty northwest winds, especially on Tuesday. Once this storm moves out of the area, enjoy the return of sunny and mild weather the rest of the work week. There will be a slight chance of showers next weekend, but the temperatures will continue to be mild. Here is Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 41. South southeast wind at 5 mph becoming east northeast.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 69. East northeast wind at 11 mph becoming south southeast.

get ready for nice weekend weather

But we still need some rain. The Sierra Nevada snowpack is only 51% of normal to this point in the wet season, which began July 1st. Chico is over 7 inches below average for rainfall to this date. It doesn't look as if any big storms are on the horizon, either. But, I'm sure people in the Midwest who are getting hammered with severe weather right now wish they could have our weather. It will be absolutely beautiful this weekend, with sunny skies both Saturday and Sunday. Highs both days will hover right around 70 degrees. There will be a slight chance of showers Tuesday and then again Thursday night into next Friday; otherwise, expect dry weather with temps at or slightly below average. Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Clear, with a low around 39. North northwest wind between 6 and 9 mph.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 69. Northeast wind at 5 mph becoming west.

Saturday Night: Clear, with a low around 42. Calm wind becoming northeast around 6 mph.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 70. North northwest wind between 3 and 6 mph.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 44. Light and variable wind.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 68.

Monday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41.

Tuesday: A slight chance of rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 60.
