a wet and rainy start to 2010

Like I've said in my previous 3 or 4 posts, take an umbrella with you if you plan on going out tonight for New Year's celebrations. There's a good chance it will rain. I was looking at our fine weekly alternative newspaper, the Chico News and Review (I have a link on my main page on the right-hand side), and there is a dearth of New Year's Eve celebrations around here! I know there aren't a lot of people who live in Butte County (the county in which Chico is located and which serves as Chico's defined metropolitan area), but I can count on one hand the number of celebrations happening tonight. Perhaps it's better to stay home and have your own celebration. That's what my husband and I plan to do- make homemade pizza and play Scrabble. Okay, that doesn't sound very exciting, but we have fun doing it. And isn't that what matters? Anyway, the main New Year's Eve events happening in our area tonight are at the Sierra Nevada brewery, the two casinos in Oroville, and a few community events at local churches and community centers. For specific info, check out the News and Review or the Chico Enterprise Record links on my home page. Have a safe and fun time whatever you end up doing tonight, and be prepared for the weather. Here's the Chico forecast from the National Weather Service:

Today: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 51. East southeast wind between 6 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

still stormy for New Year's

The National Weather Service is still predicting a wet New Year's Eve and New Year's Day as a storm with fairly abundant moisture moves ashore from the Pacific. More rain is expected with this storm than the last (Chico got a little over a third of an inch), while temperatures will remain steady in the upper 40s to lower 50s. The high temperature in Chico today was 52, while the low was 46. It should remain dry for the first weekend of 2010. Dress for the weather if heading out for New Year's celebrations. Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the NWS:

a wet New Year

It looks like it'll be wet for New Year's Eve celebrations in Chico Thursday night. Bring an umbrella if you don't want to get wet. It appears to be unsettled through Friday as a few weak systems move through. The weekend and early next week look fabulous (even though there's a slight chance of rain, it'll also be partly cloudy). I guess the stormy pattern Accuweather predicted will not occur. Sigh. I want some stormy weather! (You can picture me with my arms folded and stomping my feet.) Currently showers are moving through Chico, and the temperature is holding in the mid 40s. It's kind of a raw, damp evening. It definitely feels like winter. Here's the forecast for Chico from the NWS:

Overnight: Showers. Low around 40. South southeast wind around 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.

Wednesday: Showers likely, mainly before 10am. Cloudy, with a high near 50. Southeast wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

off and on showers

The weather this week into this weekend should remain fairly unstable, with chances for rain showers for the valley and snow for the mountains. The National Weather Service is predicting 3 to 8 inches of snow above 4000 feet in elevation tomorrow night into Wednesday morning. If you're traveling into the Sierra Nevada mountains at that time, be prepared. Otherwise, it'll be mainly nuisance- type precipitation the next several days. Temperatures in Chico will range from the upper 40s to mid 50s for highs, while lows will be in the upper 30s to lower 40s. Not too much stormy weather to talk about. We haven't had a good storm since mid October. That storm carried with it the remnants of a powerful typhoon (whose name eludes me). Gusty winds up to 50 mph and heavy rain totaling nearly two inches in 24 hours accompanied that storm. It was very exciting! Unfortunately (well, it is if you're a storm lover like me), we haven't seen anything on that scale since. I'm becoming bored with our weather pattern and hope it will get more interesting soon!

unsettled weather this week

Now the weather forecasters are saying this upcoming week will be unsettled, not quiet. A fairly potent storm will move through Tuesday night into early Wednesday, giving the valley anywhere from a quarter of an inch to three quarters of an inch of rain. Snow levels will be between 3500 to 4500 feet. They're not saying at this time how much snow will fall; that'll happen as we get closer to the actual timeframe of the storm. Other, weaker storms will move through our region into the latter part of the week. Accuweather is still saying we will see a good chance of rain for Chico the first week of 2010. We'll see if that forecast holds over the next several days. Chico did get some rain early this morning, with about .27 of an inch falling. It was overcast most of the day, with temps barely getting out of the 40s. Fog began to roll in, especially over the foothills, this evening. There may be some patchy fog in spots during the morning commute tomorrow, so be careful. Here's the NWS Chico forecast for the next seven days:

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 38. North northwest wind around 7 mph.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 52. North northwest wind between 3 and 6 mph.

Monday Night: A 10 percent chance of rain after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 34. Calm wind becoming north northeast around 5 mph.

Tuesday: A 30 percent chance of rain, mainly after 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 49. Calm wind becoming south between 4 and 7 mph.

Tuesday Night: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 39. Southeast wind between 8 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Wednesday: A 40 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 50.

Wednesday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33.

Thursday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 50.

Thursday Night: A slight chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38.

New Year's Day: A slight chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 53.

Friday Night: A slight chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41.

Saturday: A slight chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 52.

quiet time in Chico

I hope everyone had a safe and happy Christmas yesterday, and a Happy Kwanzaa and Boxing Day today! It is quiet in Chico this holiday season, especially since many of the Chico State students (and some faculty) are out of town right now. It was pretty dead at my gym this morning, and the parking lots and surrounding streets were void of vehicles. The weather, too, has been quiet. Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous, with sunny skies, light winds, and temps in the mid 50s. There has been more in the way of clouds today, and there is a 60% chance of light rain tonight. The next several days should be fairly uneventful weatherwise, with a mix of sun and clouds. There is also a slight chance for off and on showers through Thursday. High temps in Chico will mainly be in the 50s, while lows will be in the 30s. Looking ahead beyond the new year, it looks like an active weather pattern will set up for Northern California. There will be more days than not with rain, as several storms are poised to move in between January 1st and January 8th. This is according to Accuweather.com, and their extended forecasts are not the most reliable. Still, it gives me some hope that we could see a lot of moisture over the next couple of weeks. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

not too much rain in the forecast

Merry Christmas! The last couple of days in Chico have been gorgeous weather wise, with sunny skies and highs in the upper 50s to around 60 degrees. The low temps have been somewhat chilly- mainly in the lower 30s. That's not too far from where we should be this time of the year (mid 30s). The weather forecast looks somewhat unsettled over the next week, but don't expect a lot of rain or snow. It'll most likely be cloudy, with just a chance of some light sprinkles Sunday through next Thursday. Could this be the fourth below normal rainy season in a row for Northern California? I hope not, but if the past few months are any indication, the next few months don't look very good in terms of easing or eliminating the drought. Of course, Mother Nature is fickle, and we can't base future trends on past weather events. Anyway, I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season so far. Rest, relax, and enjoy the beautiful weather on tap for today! Here's the latest Chico forecast from the NWS:

Christmas Day: Sunny, with a high near 58. North northwest wind between 3 and 5 mph.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 35. Northeast wind between 3 and 5 mph.

Saturday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 53. North wind at 6 mph becoming southwest.

Saturday Night: A 30 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38. South southeast wind between 3 and 5 mph.

Sunday: A 40 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 52. East wind around 5 mph becoming northwest.

Sunday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38.

Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 52.

Monday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 36.

Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 54.

Tuesday Night: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 36.

Wednesday: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 53.

Wednesday Night: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38.

Thursday: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 53.

where's El Nino?

I'm sure a lot of Californians are asking that question right now. So far this rainy season, the state has not seen a tremendous amount of moisture. All areas of the state are reporting below normal precipitation up to this point in the season. I know it's still fairly early, but will we really see the typical El Nino pattern of the past? Normally with El Nino, most of California sees above average precipitation during the rainy season. So far, that is yet to happen. The seven day outlook doesn't look too promising, either. Maybe January will be wetter than normal. Of course, that's what I hoped for in December. For now, we remain stuck in a drought with no end in sight. Here's the latest forecast for Chico from the NWS:

Today: Sunny, with a high near 55. North northwest wind between 6 and 8 mph.

Tonight: Clear, with a low around 27. Northeast wind around 6 mph.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 56. North northwest wind between 3 and 5 mph.

Thursday Night: Clear, with a low around 28. East northeast wind between 3 and 6 mph.

Christmas Day: Sunny, with a high near 56. Northeast wind around 6 mph.

Friday Night: Patchy fog after 10pm. Otherwise, mostly clear, with a low around 33.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 55.

Saturday Night: A slight chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37.

Sunday: A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 53.

Sunday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35.

Monday: A slight chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 49.

Monday Night: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 34.

Tuesday: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 49.

If anyone has plans to travel east for the holidays, I would seriously rethink those plans. A major snowstorm will slowly move through the Midwest over the next couple of days, and the East Coast will be affected by Christmas. Many people will get their wish for a white Christmas, that's for sure!

quiet weather... for now

We need the quiet weather after yesterday's heavy downpours. Chico received over a third of an inch of rain, mainly occurring last evening. I'm rehearsing for a musical at the Chico Theater Company (called Paint Your Wagon; opens January 9th- go see it!), and right before rehearsal began the rain started pouring down. It was so loud, those of us inside the theater could barely hear each other. I thought the roof was going to cave in! After the rain moved out last evening, the winds picked up out of the northwest, gusting to over 30 mph! Today through Christmas will be much calmer, and the sun will make a return appearance after the previous three days of fog and rain. Sometime this weekend, say around Sunday, another storm will move in. This one looks colder than the previous storms, so there could potentially be low snow levels. I'll keep an eye on it. High temperatures today through Saturday will be in the low to mid 50s, but will chill down to the mid 40s Sunday and Monday. Overnight lows will be mainly in the 30s through early next week. Enjoy the return of the sun!

Chico got some rain

Chico did see some rain yesterday, measuring just under a quarter of an inch. Yesterday's high temperature was 50 degrees. The showery activity will persist today in the valley and foothills, while there is a Winter Weather Advisory in the Sierra Nevada mountains to the east of Chico. As much as 6" of snow may fall in elevations above 4000' today and tonight. Be careful if traveling in the mountains over the next 24 hours. Looking ahead, it looks like Christmas will be lovely, with sunny skies and seasonable temps. Here's the seven day Chico forecast from the National Weather Service:

Today: Showers, mainly before 4pm. High near 54. South southeast wind between 7 and 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.

Tonight: A 50 percent chance of showers before 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35. South wind around 10 mph becoming north northwest.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 51. North northwest wind between 7 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 29. North northwest wind between 7 and 10 mph.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 52. North northwest wind between 7 and 9 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 30.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 53.

Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 34.

Christmas Day: Sunny, with a high near 53.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 33.

Saturday: A slight chance of rain. Partly cloudy, with a high near 52.

Saturday Night: A slight chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 36.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 49.

forecasters wrong again

I tell you, it's almost comical how wrong the NWS forecasters are sometimes. Today's forecast for Chico called for some patchy fog in the morning, followed by sunny skies in the afternoon. The expected high temperature today was supposed to be around 60 degrees. Well, the fog lifted somewhat around mid-morning, but the overcast skies stuck around all afternoon, with a high of only 50 degrees. On the plus side, it certainly looked (and somewhat felt) like Christmas. Well, without the snow, anyway. I just wonder if the rain the NWS is calling for tomorrow and tomorrow night will actually happen. I'll just have to wait and see, I guess. After Monday, the weather looks nice, with sunny skies and highs in the mid 50s (right where Chico is supposed to be this time of year). Lows will be mainly in the low 40s. Enjoy the last few days before Christmas!

rain for the latter part of the weekend

Today was a beautiful day in Chico, with sunny skies and a high temperature of 62 degrees. I was out and about doing some last-minute Christmas shopping, and the traffic around the Chico Mall was crazy! Maybe the Christmas shopping season will be a little better than last year. Anyway, other than some online Christmas gifts en route right now, I am done with my Christmas shopping! And, I'm also done with this semester of school. I am in the Masters of Social Work program at Chico State University, and today was the last day of finals for the fall semester. I'm looking forward to the break! The weather should be fine for the next several days of my break (awkward segue, I know). The exception will be Sunday into Monday as a fairly weak storm moves through Northern California. We'll see some rain for those two days, but by Tuesday it should clear out, and it'll be lovely through Christmas Day. Of course, the forecast could always change, but for now, much of next week looks very nice. Here is the official seven day Chico forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Patchy fog after 10pm. Otherwise, partly cloudy, with a low around 41. Light north northwest wind.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 60. Light and variable wind.

Saturday Night: Patchy fog after 10pm. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 40. East northeast wind around 6 mph.

Sunday: A 20 percent chance of rain after 10am. Patchy fog before 10am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 57. East wind between 5 and 7 mph.

Sunday Night: Rain likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 43. Southeast wind between 9 and 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Monday: A 50 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 55.

Monday Night: Scattered showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 39. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 55.

Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 54.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 35.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 54.

Enjoy the last weekend before Christmas!

fine weather ahead

Chico will see some very nice weather the next several days as high pressure builds in behind a storm that gave us over half an inch of rain the past two days. Sunny skies with highs in the lower 60s are expected through Sunday. Lows will also be very mild, only dipping into the lower 40s. The mild air is originating from the balmy southern Pacific Ocean, brought in by the last storm. As we head into late December, we start to experience our coldest weather on average in Chico. Climate normals for mid to late December are 55 degrees for the high and 35 degrees for the low. As you can see, we'll be well above that the next few days. It'll definitely feel more like March than December! Get out and enjoy the weather while doing your Christmas shopping this weekend. The next chance of rain will be early next week. It's too soon to tell how strong this next storm will be, but the picture should get clearer (more clear?) as we get closer to the anticipated storm event. For now, enjoy the mild weather!

Pics

The pictures I posted are random pics in and around Chico, California. Hopefully they give one a sense of what Chico looks like and how nice it is. I also threw in several pictures of my two pugs, Ivan (the black one) and Boris (the fawn one). They are so adorable! Anyway, I'm still trying to establish links on this website. I want to include links to the Chico Chamber of Commerce, the National Weather Service, and various local media outlets. These links will provide more info on the local area. Right now this site is still a work in progress, so check back often!

Hello and Welcome

Hello, everyone! Thank you for checking out my blog. I admit I have a somewhat narrow focus- weather in Chico, California. I'm sure some of you are wondering, "Where the hell is Chico?" I wondered that myself before I moved out here with my husband in 2002. He applied for a position at California State University, Chico, and I, of course, tagged along. We moved here from Tampa, Florida, and we both instantly fell in love with the area. Chico lies in the Northern Sacramento Valley, nestled at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The city is a college town surrounded almost completely by snow-capped, heavily forested mountains. It is a beautiful area, and I will post some of my favorite photos to this blog site as soon as I figure out how. Anyway, the main focus of this blog will be Chico weather and climatology, but I will also talk about Chico itself, as well as all of the great events and happenings around town. Other topics will include my interests, politics, food, and whatever else I can think of. Feel free to comment at any time. Welcome!
