big cool down coming

After daytime high temperatures in the mid to upper 60s the past two days, winter will return with temps 10 to 12 degrees below where they have been. A cold front will move through the area late Friday and Friday night, bringing us only a slight chance of showers. What will be more noticeable will be the cooler air the cold front brings with it. High temps for both Saturday and Sunday will be in the low 60s, and by Monday only in the mid 50s! A second cold front that will arrive late Sunday will be responsible for the reinforcing shot of colder air by early next week. Fortunately, overnight lows in the valley should stay above freezing, thereby lessening any potential damage to the already blossoming almond trees. Here's the detailed forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 43. Calm wind becoming southeast around 5 mph.

Friday: A 10 percent chance of showers after 4pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 62. South southeast wind between 5 and 9 mph.

Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly after 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44. South southeast wind between 5 and 8 mph becoming calm.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 62. Calm wind.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 38.

Sunday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 60.

Sunday Night: A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 36.

Monday: A chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 53.

Monday Night: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 36.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 57.

Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 36.

Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 59.
