March goes out like a lamb... a very warm lamb

Wow! What a difference a couple of days makes. Monday we saw highs in the mid 60s, while today we hit 79 degrees. Sunny skies and a breezy north wind contributed to the rapid warm-up. Tomorrow will be even warmer, with a high expected in the mid 80s! It will be dry and tranquil, however, as March definitely goes out like a lamb. The first half of the weekend looks wet for Chico, but the second half looks gorgeous, with seasonable temperatures. Much of next week also looks fantastic, with sunny skies and warm temperatures. Here are the details for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 52. North wind between 7 and 10 mph.

some much needed dry time

After nearly two weeks of non-stop rainy weather, today was a nice change. It was a little blustery, with north winds from 15 to 25 mph. The sun was out, however, and the visibility was excellent. I had some business to tend to in Oroville today, and the drive to and from Chico was lovely, with the snow-covered Sierra Nevada mountains and the green valley grass stretching out before me. It looks like the dry pattern will hold until Saturday, when a weak disturbance will give us a chance of a shower. Otherwise, expect dry, sunny weather with high temperatures at or above normal. In fact, Thursday will be exceptionally warm, with highs a good 15 degrees above average- in the mid 80s! We go from winter to summer in four days! This warmth will be short-lived, as more seasonable temps arrive for the weekend. Here are the details from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 46. North northwest wind between 3 and 6 mph.

Tuesday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 66. Calm wind becoming south southwest around 5 mph.

Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 52. South wind around 6 mph becoming calm.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 77. North northwest wind between 6 and 9 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 56. North northwest wind around 8 mph.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 83.

some pics of the Coast Range from my house

These are two pictures of the snow-covered Coast Range mountains that I took from my house this morning. The Coast Ranges range in elevation from 3000 to 7000 feet and run along the west side of the Sacramento Valley. On clear days (and some not so clear days, as evidenced by these pictures) I can see nearly the entire length of this chain of mountains from my house. My back porch is oriented to the west, and on most summer evenings my hubby and I sit on the porch and watch the sun set behind these mountains. At the bottoms of the pictures you can barely see the city of Chico and all of its trees. Northern California is so beautiful!

one more rainy day

It would seem that March 2011 has been exceedingly wet in Chico. Our normal rainfall for March is 4.32". Chico has actually measured about that amount, with over half of the monthly average falling this past week- 2.27", to be exact. That's why there have been so many flooding concerns. Well, the heavy rains of this week combined with runoff from the foothills have swelled the creeks and rivers down in the valley. The Sacramento River at Ord Ferry, west of Chico, is expected to crest tomorrow at 115 feet (flood stage is 114 feet). Some back roads around this area are now closed due to higher than normal water levels. Also, I've heard that some areas of the Sierra Nevada, such as Lake Tahoe, have received over 5 FEET of snow this past week! Lake Tahoe has now received over 60 feet of snow this winter! This is definitely good news for the snowpack here in California. Interestingly, Chico does not rely on snowpack for its water supply. Groundwater wells are the main source of water for Chico, due to a very high (and deep) water table in the Sacramento Valley. Must be because this area was once a vast inland sea millions of years ago! Anyway, one more showery and breezy day today before the sunshine makes a glorious return tomorrow. The sun and warmer temperatures will remain in the forecast through next weekend, so get out and plant your garden (if you have one, or want one)! We may even see 80 degrees by the end of the week! Talk about a huge swing in temperatures! Highs this past week were barely in the mid 50s, and now we may see 80 degrees! I love weather! Here is the seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Today: Showers likely, mainly after 11am. Increasing clouds, with a high near 55. South southeast wind 8 to 11 mph increasing to between 18 and 21 mph. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Tonight: A 40 percent chance of showers, mainly before 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 42. South southeast wind 17 to 20 mph decreasing to between 6 and 9 mph. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 63. North northeast wind around 6 mph becoming west.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 43. North northeast wind around 8 mph.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 66. Northeast wind around 6 mph becoming west.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 49.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 76.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 76.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 52.

(literal) light at the end of the tunnel

Today's storm has been fairly intense, but not as bad as the NWS was forecasting. Peak winds in Chico today were in the 40-45 mph range. The rain was heavy at times, and there were areas around Chico that experienced clogged gutters and urban flooding. This storm winds down later this evening, but we have a few more weaker storms to get through this weekend before we finally see some much-needed dry weather. By Tuesday of next week, expect sunny skies and highs near 70 degrees. Nice! Finally, some spring weather! Better late than never, I guess. Here is the detailed Chico seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Showers, mainly before 11pm. Steady temperature around 44. South southeast wind between 14 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.

The Wind Advisory is now in effect beginning at 5 am tomorrow morning (Wednesday) and will end at 5 pm tomorrow. Gusty winds to 40 mph are possible with this storm, as well as heavy rains. A Flood Watch has also been posted for Chico and the surrounding area from 7 pm this evening through Thursday night. Expect more heavy rain (possibly exceeding an inch for both storms) and more gusty winds possibly exceeding 40 mph on Thursday. The ground is still saturated, and many trees were weakened from last weekend's storm. Power outages are again possible as a result with these next two storms. Showers will linger through the weekend, but we may see some sun (fingers crossed) for next week. Temperatures, which should be in the mid 60s for highs this time of year, will be stuck in the lower to mid 50s for the next seven days. Lows will be generally in the 40s. I just now got the power back on at my house. Just as I (and many folks here in the local area) am getting over one powerful storm, two more are in the pipeline and ready to wreak more havoc on our region. The first arrives tomorrow night and lasts into Wednesday, while the second one moves in on Thursday. Periods of moderate to heavy rain are likely (see Flood Watch above for details), and breezy conditions are also expected, especially Wednesday night and Thursday. Wind gusts up to 40 mph are predicted, which could topple more trees sitting on already saturated ground. Expect more power outages and general disruption, especially if you live near a creek, stream, or the Sacramento River. Chico Creek runs right through the heart of Chico, and it is FULL right now. Any more rain will likely cause it to rise above its banks, and some isolated flooding may be possible in Chico and on the Chico State University campus. Be careful out there, and get ready to hunker down yet again! Here's the detailed forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8pm, then a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41. Southeast wind between 7 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Tuesday: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 56. South southeast wind between 11 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

LYING AREAS CONTINUES TO BE A POSSIBILITY TODAY. FALLEN LEAVES MAY
CLOG DRAINS...WHICH COULD ALSO CAUSE MINOR ROAD FLOODING. ROCK AND
MUD SLIDES ARE ALSO POSSIBLE IN THE FOOTHILLS.

UP TO A QUARTER TO A HALF INCH OF ADDITIONAL RAINFALL IS POSSIBLE
FOR THE REST OF TODAY...WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS IN THE
FOOTHILLS.

SAFELY. MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND.

I currently have no power at my house due to very high winds early this morning. Gusts exceeded 50 mph at my house, while in Chico gusts were clocked at 46 mph. Small trees have been blown over in parts of Chico, and many streets are littered with tree limbs. Currently it is still blustery, with scattered rain showers here and there. This pattern will continue, and the winds will subside by this evening as the powerful low pressure system moves away. Showers are expected though the week ahead, with another potentially powerful storm taking aim at us Wednesday and Thursday. Oy, vey, it never ends!

Again, I can't stress enough to prepare for this. Buy non-perishable foods, batteries, and candles. Widespread power outages are likely. Tie down any loose objects, or, better yet, store them in your garage or storage shed. Hopefully this event won't be as bad as the windstorm of January 4-5, 2008. Power was out in some areas for a week! I hope that doesn't happen again. Stay safe!

potentially damaging wind storm on Sunday?

A powerful storm out over the Northern Pacific Ocean currently has its eyes set on central California. The storm should reach the central California coast on Sunday, carrying with it a very tight pressure gradient. What that translates to is a very high wind event for the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys through the Delta region east of San Francisco. It looks like the main wind event will occur south of Chico, with gusts to nearly 70 mph from Marysville to Stockton. However, we here in Chico could see wind gusts to 45 mph. With all of the recent rains we've had, the ground is super saturated. Trees could easily be uprooted with sustained winds of 25 mph and gusts to nearly 50 mph. Prepare now for this storm, as there could be property damage and power outages. Stock up on non-perishable foods and candles, and make sure you have batteries for the flashlights. Heavy rain is also possible on Sunday with this storm, so keep an eye on small creeks if you live near one. Major widespread flooding is not anticipated, however, as this storm will be a fairly quick mover. Here's the detailed forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 41. South southeast wind between 6 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Saturday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 53. South southeast wind between 11 and 18 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Saturday Night: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 43. Southeast wind between 7 and 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Sunday: Rain. High near 55. Southeast wind between 15 and 21 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

Sunday Night: Showers. Low around 43. Breezy, with a southeast wind between 14 and 23 mph, with gusts as high as 46 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

Monday: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 55. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Monday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 42.

Tuesday: A chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 56.

Not just the beer will be green today...

... but the grass will be from all the recent rain we've had. The grass across the area is a beautifully vivid emerald green right now, perfect to put people in the mood for St. Patrick's Day. I'm sure most of the bars in Chico will be open early today to celebrate, even though many of the students are out of town for spring break. The locals will have the bars to themselves, I guess. Enjoy the brief dry spell today, because more showers and more wind will invade starting tonight and lasting through this weekend (yay). A chance of showers will linger through the middle of next week, at least. Flood Advisories may be posted for this weekend, and watch out for potential mudslides if you live in the foothills. Winter Storm Warnings are already posted for the Sierra Nevada and Coast Range mountains above 5000 feet in anticipation of the next storm. I love stormy weather, but I'm also ready for warm, sunny, spring weather. Fortunately, Chico is engulfed in spring colors currently, with the aforementioned grass, the yellows of the forsythias, the whites of the pear trees, and the pinks of the cherry trees. The purple and pink colors of the plum trees are beginning to fade, as they reached their peak colors last week. Some of the other deciduous trees are budding and leafing out currently. It should continue to be pretty in Chico over the next few weeks with the fresh green leaves bursting forth. Now if only the sky would change color from slate grey to blue... Here's the latest forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

The weather has been fairly active the past three days here in Northern California. Chico has received over an inch of rain since Sunday afternoon. Winds have been gusty from the south for the past three days, and will continue to be so as several storms roll in off the Pacific. The next storm is expected to arrive late tomorrow and last through late Friday. This will be a warm storm, so expect high elevation snow levels, mainly around 5000 to 6000 feet. Moderate to heavy rain is expected over the Sacramento Valley, and mudslides may persist in the nearby foothills (including where I live). Watch for rising waters in creeks and streams in the area. If you live near one, prepare to evacuate. So much for a nice spring break- many activities will need to be indoors for the rest of this week. Hopefully the rain will ease to just nuisance showers by this weekend, but these showers are forecasted to last into next week. Temperatures for Chico will mainly be in the 50s and lower 60s for highs, while lows will be in the 40s. I was hoping to make it to Table Mountain this week to check out the beautiful wildflowers, as they normally peak about this time of year. With this miserable weather, perhaps not. Stay safe!

another storm arrives today

First off, I wanted to briefly discuss a wonderful program I attended last night at Laxson Auditorium on the Chico State campus. It's called "Keeping Dance Alive," and it is put on annually by the Friends of Chico Community Ballet. This organization ensures that the art medium of dance continues and thrives in our fair city of Chico. "Keeping Dance Alive" is an annual showcase (now in its 20th year) of a celebration of different dance styles performed by local youth. Last night's performances included traditional ballet, modern ballet, hip hop, flamenco, and traditional Japanese dance. The sets, costumes, and choreography were amazing, and it's a great thing that we have so much local talent. It's yet another cool thing about Chico. Anyway, weatherwise we will be cool and damp for much of the upcoming work week, so don't put away the jackets and umbrellas just yet. Rain and breezy conditions will occur today in the valley, while elevations above 5000 feet in the mountains will see 4-8 inches of snow. Winds may gust to 40 mph in the mountains this afternoon, creating reduced visibility and dangerous driving conditions. There'll be a brief lull before the next storm comes in Tuesday. It'll be showery Wednesday through the end of the week, with below average temps during that same period (we should be around 64 degrees for the high for mid-March). Here are the details from the National Weather Service:

Today: Rain, mainly after 11am. High near 61. Southeast wind between 8 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Tonight: Rain. Low around 48. South southeast wind between 7 and 16 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

wet weather returns... again

I wanted to post this fantastic photo of an almond orchard in bloom near Chico, taken in late February of this year. This photo is courtesy of Anthony Dunn Photography, and can also be found on the Butte County photostream on Flickr. It's a beautiful picture, and gives those of you not from the local area an idea of how gorgeous our area of the world is. As far as the local weather goes, it's time to get those umbrellas back out (if you ever put them away in the first place), as another series of storms moves through our area over the next several days. I was hoping the first half of the weekend would be dry, but it looks like we'll see a decent shot of rain for tomorrow (Saturday), with rain likely tomorrow night and Sunday. Winds look to be gusty, as well, generally out of the south between 15 and 25 mph. It looks like a weekend for indoor activities. Here's the latest forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 43. Southeast wind around 6 mph.

more rain coming

After a beautiful day today and a fair day yesterday (yesterday's high in Chico under partly to mostly cloudy skies was 63 degrees; today's high under mostly sunny skies and breezy conditions was 66 degrees) it looks like wet weather will return for the end of the week. A fast-moving storm will enter the picture early tomorrow and will be out of here by tomorrow night. A half inch to an inch of rain is expected in the Sacramento Valley, along with winds of 15 to 20 mph and gusts to 25 mph. The Sierra Nevada mountains will see 4-8 inches of snow above 5000 feet between tomorrow morning and late tomorrow night. We'll get a brief break Friday through Sunday before the rain returns Sunday night. Right now the forecast models are setting up a fairly unsettled pattern through at least the middle of next week. It's too soon to make exact forecast predictions at this point, but keep checking back for updates on the potentially soggy extended outlook. For now, here's the latest detailed forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

dreary day

It has been a dreary day today in Chico, with light rain falling most of the day and temps stuck in the mid 50s. The unofficial high in Chico today was 55 degrees. Over six-tenths of an inch of rain fell, as well. More shower activity is forecast for tonight through Tuesday before sunshine and warmer temperatures return by the middle of the week. There will be slight chances of rain for late in the week and next weekend as weak weather disturbances clip our area. Otherwise, look forward to the long-awaited return of spring weather! Here is the detailed forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: A chance of showers before 10pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 10pm and 4am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4am. Cloudy, with a low around 40. Light south southeast wind. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

update on unsettled weather

The latest from the National Weather Service office in Sacramento:

A PACIFIC FRONT WILL BRING VALLEY RAIN AND MOUNTAIN SNOW TO
INTERIOR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY. PRECIPITATION
WILL SPREAD OVER THE AREA TONIGHT AND INCREASE IN INTENSITY OVER
MUCH OF THE AREA AFTER MIDNIGHT. ALTHOUGH THERE MAY BE A BREAK OR
LULL IN THE RAIN AND SNOW SUNDAY EVENING...A COLDER STORM SYSTEM
WILL MOVE INTO THE AREA LATE SUNDAY INTO MONDAY BRINGING ADDITIONAL
RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS TO THE AREA.

IN THE COASTAL AND NORTHERN INTERIOR MOUNTAINS...RAIN AND SNOW WILL
INCREASE TONIGHT AND SUNDAY WITH PERIODS OF MODERATE SNOW AND
GUSTY WINDS. SNOW LEVELS INITIALLY AROUND 6000 TO 7000 FEET SHOULD
LOWER TO 3000 TO 4000 FEET AS THE COLDER STORM MOVES INLAND LATE
SUNDAY INTO MONDAY. TWO TO 7 INCHES OF SNOW IS EXPECTED OVER THE
COASTAL RANGE WITH 5 TO 9 INCHES OF SNOW OVER THE SHASTA COUNTY
MOUNTAINS THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT. THE HEAVIER AMOUNTS ARE EXPECTED
TO BE GENERALLY BE ABOVE 5000 FEET.

RAIN IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP IN THE CENTRAL VALLEY LATER TONIGHT
AND CONTINUE INTO SUNDAY. ALTHOUGH THE RAIN MAY LET UP AT TIMES
SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING...OCCASIONAL SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED LATE
SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY. THE COLDER AIR MOVING INTO THE AREA
SUNDAY NIGHT MAY BRING A FEW THUNDERSTORMS TO THE AREA. RAINFALL
AMOUNTS IN THE SACRAMENTO VALLEY SHOULD RANGE FROM A THIRD OF AN
INCH TO NEARLY AN INCH THROUGH MONDAY.

PERSONS PLANNING TRAVEL INTO THE MOUNTAINS OVER THE WEEKEND
INTO MONDAY SHOULD CHECK THE LATEST NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE
FORECAST INFORMATION AND ROAD CONDITIONS PRIOR TO DEPARTURE.
DRIER WEATHER IS FORECAST FOR TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY.

Overall I'd say this is a fairly benign storm with light winds and occasionally moderate precip. Nothing exciting or unusual- mainly just nuisance rain for the valley. The mountains may experience the harsher conditions.

another storm for the weekend

I wonder if this storm will be a dud, as well. For now, the National Weather Service is saying expect light rain tomorrow but more moderate rainfall Sunday into Monday. Two storms will affect the region: The first will enter late tomorrow into Sunday, while the second will arrive Sunday night and linger into Monday. The first storm is a mild storm, so expect snow levels above 6000 feet in the Sierra Nevada. The second storm is colder, so snow levels may drop to around 4000 feet Sunday night into Monday morning. Three feet of snow is forecast for the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada by Monday afternoon. Gusty winds are expected, but the NWS is not stating specific wind speeds at this time. Keep checking back for updates. In the meantime, if you have travel plans into the mountains this weekend (a little skiing in Tahoe, perhaps?), make plans accordingly. Here is the specific seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44. East southeast wind between 3 and 7 mph.

Saturday: Rain likely after 4pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 62. Calm wind becoming south southeast between 6 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Saturday Night: Rain. Low around 46. Southeast wind between 7 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Sunday: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 59. South southeast wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Sunday Night: Rain likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Monday: A 40 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 58.

Monday Night: A slight chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 39.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 58.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 39.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 66.

Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 40.

Thursday: A chance of rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 64.

another dud of a storm

Once again, the drama queens at the National Weather Service overhyped this storm, just like so many previous ones. The storm that moved through today (well, the actual cold front moved through; the low pressure system is still spinning off the coast of British Columbia) produced wind gusts of around 25 mph (yawn) and light but steady rain totaling just .59" (unimpressive). The forecast was for wind gusts in excess of 40 mph and an inch of rain. I am disappointed because I am a storm lover. I remember when I was growing up back in Indiana, looking towards the western sky during the spring and summer and seeing the grey and black clouds moving closer. I would watch lightning snake its way out of those clouds followed by distant rumbles of thunder. The hair on the back of my neck stood up and my heart would begin to race. That's what I miss. Here in Northern California, I have to be content with the occasional strong winter storm, but we haven't had any good ones as of late. Not that I want property damage or people injured. I just like having my adrenaline pumped by a good, powerful storm. I know I'm weird (my husband keeps telling me this), but I know I'm not alone. Anyway, expect hit or miss garden-variety showers the next 24 hours, followed by a brief break on Friday. Another storm moves in for the weekend, followed by sunny and warmer weather for next week. Here are the details for Chico from the NWS:

Tonight: Showers. Low around 43. Southeast wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Thursday: Showers likely, mainly before 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 59. Southeast wind between 7 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Thursday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers before 10pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 42. Southeast wind between 6 and 9 mph.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 63. South southeast wind between 3 and 7 mph.

Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 42. Southeast wind between 8 and 10 mph.

Saturday: A 50 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 61.

Saturday Night: Rain. Low around 45. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

Sunday: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 59.

Sunday Night: Rain likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 40.

Monday: A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 57.

Monday Night: A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37.
