wet and breezy Sunday; back to normal later this week

The risk of thunderstorms is still in the forecast today for the Sacramento Valley, but any widespread severe weather is not expected. Still, an isolated severe thunderstorm cell could pop up later this afternoon, producing gusty winds and small hail. Be prepared to seek shelter if that happens. Otherwise, expect showers this morning, along with gusty winds to nearly 30 mph. The sun may break out through the clouds later this morning or early this afternoon. That will further destabilize the atmosphere, causing warm air at the surface (heated by the sun, of course) to rise into the colder, unstable air aloft. This usually creates showers and thunderstorms. Showers persist into the early part of the work week, but we will be back in the sun and warmer temps by the middle and latter part of the week. Today: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce small hail. High near 60. South southeast wind between 9 and 14 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 43. South wind 7 to 14 mph becoming east. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Monday: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 62. North northeast wind at 7 mph becoming southwest. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Monday Night: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45. East southeast wind between 7 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tuesday: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 62. East wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Tuesday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 46.

Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 72.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 49.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 79.
