The weather will cooperate this weekend for any outdoor pursuit, as temps only reach the mid 80s for highs both Saturday and Sunday. Major events happening in Chico (if you have nothing planned) include the Slice of Chico (happening downtown beginning at 9am Saturday), and a birthday party for Chico's founders, John and Annie Bidwell, also on Saturday at Bidwell Mansion. According to the Chico News and Review (our local weekly rag), John Bidwell would have turned 192 this year, while Annie would have been 172. And they don't look a day over 150! Seriously, this may be one of the last events held at Bidwell Mansion, as it is run by the state parks department. Due to ongoing budget constraints, Bidwell Mansion is threatened with closure next year. Right now it looks like it will happen, so take a tour of the historic mansion while the tours last! It is a shame that it's closing, as it is truly the jewel of Chico, and a central part of this city's history. Hopefully either the city or a private group (preferably non-profit) can take it over. Even if it can only stay open on the weekends, it's better than closing it altogether. There's also lots of art showings at our local galleries, and theater offerings at our local theaters.
