mid- 80s for next week?

First of all, I want to send my thoughts out to the victims of the 100+ tornadoes that spawned from Mississippi northeastward into Virginia last night into early this morning. So far the death toll is nearing 300 people. This is one of the worst tornado outbreaks in this country's history, and my heart goes out to all who have been affected. I know I complain when stormy weather passes me by, and I miss some of the severe weather I experienced growing up in Indiana. However, I also would never wish this upon anyone. Again, my thoughts and prayers are with the tornado victims. Closer to home, it has been calm and downright lovely, with today's high temperature in Chico of 71 degrees. Today began with overcast skies, but the clouds eventually parted enough by early afternoon to let the sun shine through. The next seven days look gorgeous, with sunny skies and temps warming into the mid 80s for highs! We are going from March to May in the space of a few days! Here's the detailed seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

gorgeous week ahead

Today was absolutely stellar, with sunny skies, light northwesterly (read: dry) winds, and warm temperatures into the lower 70s. Basically take today's weather and multiply it by seven, and you have Chico's forecast. Oh, and add 5 to 8 degrees to today's high temperature. There are no storms or rain showers on the horizon, so if there's any spring cleaning or yard work you've been dying to get to, but couldn't because of the soggy weather we've had the past few weeks, well, this is the week to do these activities. Or, if you'd rather do some fun outdoor activities, such as play a round of golf or tennis, go for a hike in the nearby foothills or mountains, or ride your bike in Bidwell Park, then the weather will definitely cooperate for these activities, as well. Just get out and enjoy! Here is Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 43. North northwest wind between 3 and 5 mph.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 72. Calm wind becoming south between 5 and 8 mph.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 45. Southeast wind between 6 and 9 mph.

Easter looks damp; rain lingers into early week

Happy Easter! You may be able to get in a good Easter egg hunt this morning before the showers move in later. Alas, it looks damp and cool today, with limited sun. I suppose you can still show off your brightly colored Easter dress, but it won't have the same dazzle due to the limited sunshine. It looks like two storm systems will affect our region; one will move in today, and the other, stronger system tomorrow. Hopefully the one tomorrow will be it for several days, as strong high pressure builds in later this week. Look for sunny skies and warm (but not hot) temperatures Tuesday through next Saturday. Nice! Here's the detailed seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Today: A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 66. South wind between 5 and 7 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tonight: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 53. South southeast wind around 7 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Monday: Rain likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 62. South southeast wind between 8 and 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 43. South southeast wind around 9 mph becoming north northwest.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 72. North northwest wind around 8 mph.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 46.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 75.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 53.

below average temps continue

Sorry I haven't posted in a few days. Busy with work and fighting a persistent cold. The weather has been rather uneventful the past few days, with a mix of sun and clouds and highs mainly in the 60s to around 70 degrees. This time of year Chico should be in the mid to upper 70s for high temps. Looking at the seven day forecast, it appears we won't reach at or above average until Wednesday, and that's only briefly. In addition, rain and showers linger in the forecast from today through Monday. When will we finally see persistent spring weather? Perhaps next week, when a ridge of strong high pressure anchors itself over the West Coast. Until then, we'll have to deal with below average temps and off-and-on showers. Here's the updated Chico forecast from the National Weather Service:

Today: A 20 percent chance of showers after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 65. Southeast wind between 6 and 8 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tonight: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 49. East southeast wind 6 to 8 mph becoming north northeast. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Sunday: A 40 percent chance of rain, mainly after 11am. Partly sunny, with a high near 69. East northeast wind 7 to 13 mph becoming south southeast. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Sunday Night: A 30 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 50. Southeast wind between 9 and 13 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Monday: A 40 percent chance of rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 67. South southeast wind between 10 and 18 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 45.

showers return

Today wasn't as sunny as predicted, with mostly cloudy skies a good part of the day here in Chico. The high temperature did make it to 73 degrees, however, which is right about where we should be for the middle of April. Another storm system will begin to affect us tomorrow, with increasing southerly winds ahead of it and a chance for some light rain. The showers become steadier and more numerous tomorrow night and linger into Thursday. Right now forecast models are showing some rain affecting our weekend, but keep your fingers crossed that it won't happen. Here are the details for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 53. Southeast wind between 5 and 7 mph.

Wednesday: A 20 percent chance of showers after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 66. South southeast wind 7 to 10 mph increasing to between 15 and 18 mph. Winds could gust as high as 23 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

showery tonight; pleasant for the work week

Yesterday's high temperature in Chico was 79 degrees under partly sunny skies. There was a pleasant west/ southwesterly breeze which made the warmth tolerable. Look for increasing clouds today as a storm system moves closer to our area this afternoon and into tonight. Showers will linger tomorrow before sunshine returns on Tuesday. A quick- moving storm invades Wednesday night but should beat a hasty retreat by Thursday morning. High temperatures should be in the 60s and 70s (quite nice!), while overnight lows will range from the mids 40s to lower 50s. Oh, I also added a link to my links list to the right of my blog entries. The Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Foundation has been taking care of abandoned and neglected exotic and wild animals since 1994. The Foundation recently moved from their cramped quarters in Durham, south of Chico, to roomier digs in Butte Valley near the Butte College main campus. The Foundation just opened to the public this past week. Check out the good things they are doing at their website, then pay them a visit at their beautiful new grounds. It's like Chico has its own zoo! Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Today: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly after 11am. Increasing clouds, with a high near 73. South southeast wind between 9 and 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tonight: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 54. Calm wind becoming south southeast between 8 and 11 mph. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Monday: A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 67. South southeast wind between 8 and 10 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

quiet weather

In stark contrast to the severe weather plaguing much of the middle and eastern parts of the U.S., we here in Northern California have been experiencing quiet, tranquil weather. Today has been overcast, with slightly below average temps in the mid-60s. We're on the tail-end of a front that will be sweeping through our area overnight tonight, bringing with it a slight chance of showers over the next 24 hours. A more vigorous system moves through Sunday night into Monday, bringing a better chance of wet weather. Tuesday through next Friday look pleasant, with sunny skies and highs in the 60s and 70s. Overnight lows through the period should range from the mid 40s to the low 50s. Enjoy your weekend! Here are the details of Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 52. East wind between 5 and 7 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Is it spring... or winter?

Mother Nature can't seem to make up her mind over which season it is. The calendar says April, but it feels more like late February. Yesterday was very nice, if a bit breezy, with partly sunny skies and a high temperature of 68 degrees. Clouds increased late in the day yesterday, and we actually saw some rain showers pass through Chico around mid-morning this morning. A large thunderstorm cell passed just to the south of Chico earlier this afternoon, bringing with it lightning, gusty winds, and small hail. Chico may still see some thunderstorm activity through the rest of this afternoon as a cold pocket of air hangs over us. The high temp today in Chico was only 58 degrees; we should be around 74 for this time of year. Temps will remain below average through the rest of the work week, but will moderate to around average by this weekend. There's a slight chance of rain Friday and Friday night, but expect dry and warm weather this weekend into next week. The Chico- specific forecast was not available from the National Weather Service; here is the regional forecast for the Sacramento Valley, followed by a 48 hour breakdown of temperatures and precip chances for Chico:

Tonight...Partly cloudy. Lows 36 to 42. Southeast winds up to 10 mph.

Thursday...Partly cloudy. Highs 62 to 68. South winds up to 10 mph.

Thursday Night...Mostly cloudy. Lows around 46. South winds around 10 mph in the evening becoming light.

Friday...Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain. Highs 64 to 70. Light winds becoming southeast around 10 mph in the afternoon.

Friday Night...Mostly cloudy with a slight chance of rain showers. Lows around 50. South winds around 10 mph in the evening becoming light.

Saturday...Mostly cloudy with a slight chance of rain showers. Highs around 75.

Saturday Night...Partly cloudy. Lows around 53.

Sunday And Sunday Night...Mostly cloudy. Highs 70 to 75. Lows around 52.

nice and quiet weather

After a rather chilly and unsettled late week, this weekend and most of next week look dry and quiet. Partly to mostly sunny skies and high temps in the 60s and 70s will be the rule for Chico and the northern Sacramento Valley through the end of next week. It appears that our rainy season (for the most part) is over. Considering it was a La Nina winter, and that during La Ninas we here in Northern California experience cooler and drier conditions than average, we were fairly wet this past winter. Chico received more than two inches above our normal seasonal rainfall. However, we probably averaged about normal for temperatures, considering we had a very mild January and February. I'm just hoping we don't have a blazingly hot summer! Here's Chico's seven day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Today: Partly sunny, with a high near 66. South southeast wind between 3 and 8 mph.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 46. South southeast wind between 8 and 11 mph.

Monday: A 20 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 65. South southeast wind around 9 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 45. South southeast wind 6 to 8 mph becoming east northeast.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 67. Northeast wind at 5 mph becoming south southwest.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 44.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 63.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 45.

Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 68.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 51.

Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 72.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 53.

weird weather

Okay, an unofficial source (okay, my husband) told me that it snowed in Chico late this afternoon. Since I was home at the time, and not in Chico when this alleged event occurred, I cannot confirm this. How can it possibly snow when the air temperature is in the mid 50s? Impossible! Perhaps it was sleet or small hail (sleet fell at my house at the same time this "snow" event happened). Perhaps I'll never know for sure, but there has been some weird weather happenings today. First, the nearly 20 degree below normal temperatures. Highs only reached the mid and upper 50s today! Highs this time of year should be in the lower 70s. It will remain below normal for temps the next seven days, as well. Second, the precipitation. Whether it was snow or hail or sleet that fell in Chico, it is quite weird for this time of year. Not too unusual, but weird. Especially considering we were near 80 degrees just a few days ago. Lingering showers and thunderstorms will remain in the forecast through the evening as this deep trough of low pressure continues to affect the entire West Coast. This weekend looks nice, though. Here is the seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Scattered showers and thunderstorms before 11pm. Some of the storms could produce small hail. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38. West northwest wind between 7 and 10 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 61. Light northwest wind.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 41. East southeast wind between 5 and 8 mph becoming calm.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 67. Calm wind becoming west around 5 mph.

Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 46. Southeast wind around 7 mph.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 67.

Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 47.

Monday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 63.

Monday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 44.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 67.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 48.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 68.

Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 47.

Thursday: A chance of rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 64.

cooler and unsettled

The past two days have been gorgeous (with the exception of some low clouds this morning), with highs yesterday in the mid 70s and today in the lower 70s. Kiss that warmth goodbye, because we're not going to see temps that warm for awhile. Normal highs for Chico this time of year are around 69-70 degrees, but we'll be below that for the next seven days. Low temperatures will also be quite chilly- in the 30s and 40s for overnight lows this weekend! There is also a decent chance of rain tomorrow night into Thursday, and again late Sunday. If you've put away the umbrellas thinking the rainy season is over, you may want to pull them back out again. Also, if you're heading into the mountains later this week, prepare for wintry weather in the form of snow. Several inches of snow are possible above 4000 feet in the Sierra Nevada, and some light accumulations may even be possible above 2000 feet. Here are the details for Chico's forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 47. North northwest wind between 8 and 13 mph.

Wednesday: Increasing clouds, with a high near 64. Northwest wind between 8 and 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Wednesday Night: A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41. Northwest wind between 4 and 7 mph becoming calm.

Thursday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 11am. Partly sunny, with a high near 57. West northwest wind between 7 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Thursday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37. North northwest wind around 10 mph.

Friday: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 60.

Friday Night: Clear, with a low around 37.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 62.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 44.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 61.

Sunday Night: A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44.

Monday: A slight chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 63.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 45.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 64.

warmth will be leaving us

Man, was it breezy yesterday, or what? Winds in Chico gusted to nearly 40 mph from the northwest. It was a bad hair day, for sure. Today will also be breezy, though hopefully not as bad as yesterday. On a Bad Hair Day Scale of 1 to 5, yesterday was a 5; today should be a three. At least the sun came out yesterday. When I woke up there were low clouds around, and I thought it would rain. By around 10 am, the clouds pushed off to the east, and glorious blue skies moved in to replace the clouds. That was also around the same time the winds really became gusty, as high pressure fought with low pressure to see which would dominate the weather. Of course, for those of you who don't know, winds are just the result of the difference in pressure between high and low pressure. Think of it as an "air waterfall," in which air from high pressure rushes "downhill" into low pressure. The result is high winds. As low pressure moves further away from high pressure, the winds slacken, as the "hill" is not as steep. Yesterday was the result of high pressure moving in faster than low pressure wanted to exit, resulting in those crazy winds. The winds should not be as gusty today, though, and the abundant sunshine will warm temps into the lower 70s (much like yesterday). However, a trough of colder low pressure will invade our area by Thursday, and temperatures will only be in the upper 50s for highs. Brrr! There will also be a slight chance of showers, but I think most of the shower activity will pass to our north. This colder weather will be short-lived, as warmer temps return for next weekend. Here are the forecast details for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Today: Sunny, with a high near 71. North northwest wind around 11 mph.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 47. North northwest wind between 6 and 11 mph.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 75. North wind between 3 and 11 mph.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 52. Southeast wind between 7 and 9 mph.

Tuesday: A 20 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 73. East wind around 7 mph becoming northwest.

Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 48.

Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 69.

Wednesday Night: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 47.

Thursday: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 58.

Thursday Night: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 42.

Friday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 59.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 44.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 65.

Happy April!

The warm weather streak continues for Chico, with three days in a row of abnormally warm temperatures. Yesterday's high in Chico was 81 degrees, while the current temperature is 80. We should be around 68-69 degrees for early April. I have some sad news, and it's no April Fools' joke: if you have enjoyed the warm weather of late, don't get used to it. It is going bye-bye next week. Tomorrow we'll see more clouds than sun, with just a slight chance of showers. Temps will be seasonable tomorrow and Sunday, and the sunshine returns for the second half of the weekend. Monday and Tuesday look gorgeous, with sunny skies and nice temperatures. However, a fairly strong trough of cooler and unsettled weather will affect us beginning around the middle of next week. At that time, we'll see an increase in shower activity and below normal temps for both highs and lows. In the near-term, the weekend doesn't look too bad, so get out and enjoy some outdoor activities. My hubby and I will probably get to some long-neglected yard work this weekend. Enjoy, whatever you do! Here's the detailed forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

Tonight: A 20 percent chance of showers after 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 54. South southeast wind between 5 and 10 mph.

Saturday: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 69. Calm wind becoming west between 5 and 8 mph.
