winter returns

It has been blustery in Chico and surrounding areas today, with winds gusting to nearly 40 mph at the Chico Airport around noon. These winds are being caused by a strong low pressure system and associated cold front originating from the Gulf of Alaska. Rain should overtake the valley later this evening, while snow will begin piling up in the Sierra Nevada foothills and mountains tonight. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Sierra above 2000 feet from 10 pm tonight through 10 pm tomorrow night (Wednesday). Expect 4-6 inches of snow above 2000 feet (including upper Paradise, Magalia, and Forest Ranch), while elevations above 4500 feet will be looking at 1 to 2 feet of new snow. Winds will be howling in both valley and mountain locations. A Wind Advisory is in effect for the central and northern Sacramento Valley (including Chico) beginning at 6 this evening and ending at 10 am tomorrow. Winds may gust to 45 mph in the valley and 65-70 mph in the mountains. Power outages may be possible as tree limbs snap and fall on power lines. Blizzard conditions will exist overnight tonight and through the day tomorrow in the Sierra Nevada mountains. How exciting! Our first bona fide winter storm of the season! We would normally see this type of storm in November or December. Here is the detailed seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:
