Yesterday and today have been absolutely spectacular, with highs in the mid 70s and wall-to-wall sunshine. The visibility has been excellent, and you can see some of the snow-dusted peaks of the Coast Range and the Sierra Nevada from Chico. Plus, some of the trees are beginning to show their fall colors. It's just a matter of time before there will be a sea of orange, gold, and red all over Chico. Also, it may be too late to remind people of this, but the annual Parade of Lights is happening right now in downtown Chico. If you're going, bring a jacket or sweater as temps will fall into the lower 60s this evening. Other than a slight chance of rain on Monday, the next seven days look wonderful. Temperatures will warm into the mid 80s by Thursday, but cool back down into the 70s by next weekend. Hopefully we can say goodbye to the 90s for the rest of the year! Here's the detailed forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

what a storm!
Last night's severe thunderstorm that rolled through Chico around 6 pm was intense. Hail the size of golf balls and quarters rained down on the northern part of the city, while vivid lightning flashed and thunder boomed loudly. The hail was so intense, many trees were partly stripped of their leaves and hail was still covering the ground in some parts of Chico through late morning. There's a Camphor tree right outside my office building, and its leaves littered the ground around the base of the tree. It was a very unusual sight. Rain continued into the morning hours today, but the sun finally began to peek out between the clouds by early this afternoon. Slow clearing should continue the rest of the day, leading to a partly cloudy sky tonight. Radiational cooling will take effect tonight, as skies clear and winds abate. Expect overnight lows to dip into the mid 40s. The rest of the seven day forecast looks fantastic, with clear skies and warming temperatures each day. No storms are on the horizon, giving Chico a chance to recover from the recent stormy weather. Enjoy the gorgeous weather this weekend! Here's the detailed seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

stormy Wednesday
There is currently a Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect until 6:15 pm for northwestern Butte County. A severe thunderstorm cell is moving eastward out of Tehama County and into northwestern Butte County at this time. This thunderstorm may produce a weak tornado and stay mainly over sparsely populated rural areas. It has been a stormy 24 hours in Chico. The city has picked up over an inch of rain since yesterday afternoon. The winds weren't nearly as strong as predicted, so there were no power outages. However, despite a mainly dry and sunny morning this morning, the clouds quickly built up and scattered afternoon thunderstorms have been the result. This shower activity will continue into the evening before it begins to calm down after 9pm tonight. Look forward to a beautiful fall weekend, with highs in the 70s both Saturday and Sunday. wet and windy the next 36 hrs
There is a weak frontal system moving through the area currently, bringing with it very light scattered rain showers. Chico may see .05" out of this system tonight. Temperatures today with the clouds have been kept cool, with highs only in the upper 60s (we should be at 85 degrees for the normal high for this date). We'll see a small break between weather systems during the day tomorrow, but the nasty weather will move in tomorrow night and linger into Wednesday. Rainfall amounts may add up to nearly one inch in Chico, with 1-2 inches in the foothills east of town (including Paradise and Magalia). Wind gusts between 30-40 mph may bring down some tree branches. If some of those branches fall upon power lines, expect power outages in some areas. Isolated urban flooding is possible with the heavier rain. There is a Winter Storm Warning up for the Sierra Nevada above 5500' from Wednesday morning through Wednesday night. Expect up to six to eight inches of snow above 6000', along with wind gusts to 50 mph through the passes. This could create whiteout conditions, so be sure you are prepared for treacherous travel if driving through the mountain passes. This storm is unusually strong for this time of year- we normally see these types of storms in December or January. This may be an interesting rainy season. Here is the detailed seven day forecast for Chico from the National Weather Service:

will it be stormy or not?
The National Weather Service day-by-day forecast seems to suggest this storm won't really be all that significant, as only a 60% chance of showers are in Tuesday night's forecast. However, the Special Weather Statements on the NWS Sacramento home page state a fairly potent storm will affect the Northstate Tuesday night and into Wednesday with moderate to heavy rain and wind gusts to 40 mph. Which forecast will win? Personally, I'm ready for some stormy weather, so I favor the latter forecast. To be honest, it's still too early to tell, as this potential storm is still way out in the Pacific. As we get closer to the actual (or perceived) event, the details will become more clear. For now, enjoy the nice weather this weekend! Today's high temperature in Chico at the airport was just 73 degrees- 13 degrees below average. The day started out partly sunny, then quickly turned overcast by mid-morning. By early afternoon, the sun broke through the clouds, warming the temperature into the 70s. Skies should clear out tonight and the winds will slacken, and tomorrow is expected to be mostly sunny. Winds will pick up again tomorrow from the south ahead of the next weak storm expected to affect our weather on Monday. Here is the detailed seven day forecast for Chico from the NWS (again, downplaying the big storm):
