Wow! What a difference a couple of days makes. Monday we saw highs in the mid 60s, while today we hit 79 degrees. Sunny skies and a breezy north wind contributed to the rapid warm-up. Tomorrow will be even warmer, with a high expected in the mid 80s! It will be dry and tranquil, however, as March definitely goes out like a lamb. The first half of the weekend looks wet for Chico, but the second half looks gorgeous, with seasonable temperatures. Much of next week also looks fantastic, with sunny skies and warm temperatures. some much needed dry time
After nearly two weeks of non-stop rainy weather, today was a nice change. It was a little blustery, with north winds from 15 to 25 mph. The sun was out, however, and the visibility was excellent. I had some business to tend to in Oroville today, and the drive to and from Chico was lovely, with the snow-covered Sierra Nevada mountains and the green valley grass stretching out before me. It looks like the dry pattern will hold until Saturday, when a weak disturbance will give us a chance of a shower. Otherwise, expect dry, sunny weather with high temperatures at or above normal. In fact, Thursday will be exceptionally warm, with highs a good 15 degrees above average- in the mid 80s! We go from winter to summer in four days! This warmth will be short-lived, as more seasonable temps arrive for the weekend. Here are the details from the National Weather Service:

some pics of the Coast Range from my house
These are two pictures of the snow-covered Coast Range mountains that I took from my house this morning. The Coast Ranges range in elevation from 3000 to 7000 feet and run along the west side of the Sacramento Valley. On clear days (and some not so clear days, as evidenced by these pictures) I can see nearly the entire length of this chain of mountains from my house. My back porch is oriented to the west, and on most summer evenings my hubby and I sit on the porch and watch the sun set behind these mountains. At the bottoms of the pictures you can barely see the city of Chico and all of its trees. Northern California is so beautiful!
one more rainy day
It would seem that March 2011 has been exceedingly wet in Chico. Our normal rainfall for March is 4.32". Chico has actually measured about that amount, with over half of the monthly average falling this past week- 2.27", to be exact. That's why there have been so many flooding concerns. Well, the heavy rains of this week combined with runoff from the foothills have swelled the creeks and rivers down in the valley. The Sacramento River at Ord Ferry, west of Chico, is expected to crest tomorrow at 115 feet (flood stage is 114 feet). Some back roads around this area are now closed due to higher than normal water levels. Also, I've heard that some areas of the Sierra Nevada, such as Lake Tahoe, have received over 5 FEET of snow this past week! Lake Tahoe has now received over 60 feet of snow this winter! This is definitely good news for the snowpack here in California. Interestingly, Chico does not rely on snowpack for its water supply. Groundwater wells are the main source of water for Chico, due to a very high (and deep) water table in the Sacramento Valley. Must be because this area was once a vast inland sea millions of years ago! Anyway, one more showery and breezy day today before the sunshine makes a glorious return tomorrow. The sun and warmer temperatures will remain in the forecast through next weekend, so get out and plant your garden (if you have one, or want one)! We may even see 80 degrees by the end of the week! Talk about a huge swing in temperatures! Highs this past week were barely in the mid 50s, and now we may see 80 degrees! I love weather! another wet and windy weekend
There is a Wind Advisory in effect until 7 pm this evening for the central Sacramento Valley (including Chico) for winds gusting to 40 mph. There will be a small break tonight before another wet and breezy storm barrels through our area tomorrow. Showers will linger into Sunday before we get a much needed break beginning Monday and lasting through the end of next week. (literal) light at the end of the tunnel
Today's storm has been fairly intense, but not as bad as the NWS was forecasting. Peak winds in Chico today were in the 40-45 mph range. The rain was heavy at times, and there were areas around Chico that experienced clogged gutters and urban flooding. This storm winds down later this evening, but we have a few more weaker storms to get through this weekend before we finally see some much-needed dry weather. By Tuesday of next week, expect sunny skies and highs near 70 degrees. Nice! Finally, some spring weather! Better late than never, I guess.
